Hi,
Just wondering how to choose a green tea is there anything specific I need to look for and is there really a benefit to even drink it ?

If you like it, drink it because it it has some antioxidants, but if you don't then do not bother because many other foods have antioxidants.
My fav tea is peppermint.0 -
As above. The main benefit I find from it (and any tea) is holding off hunger.0

Green tea boosts metabolism and keeps you hydrated. I drink green tea in the morning, half an hour after lunch, and before bed. Don't drink it on an empty stomach. But mornings are an exception.
At the beginning of the year, before I joined MFP, I would drink green tea three times each day. I lost three and a half kilos in a month. It is very effective.0 -

Green tea does not significantly boost metabolism. WebMD says in one study it only increased TDEE by about 4.5% (which for a original TDEE of 2000kcals would equate to about 90 calories), but even then not all variables were isolated (illness, menstruation, stress, and other body processes all affect metabolism). In the time that it takes to drink a cup of tea (20ish minutes), you could have burned more calories briskly walking.
The ONLY way one can boost their metabolism significantly is through physical activity (you burn more calories per minute standing instead of sitting or walking instead of standing) and gaining muscle (a pound of muscle burns more calories per day than a pound of fat). There's no magic gimmicks, and the weight you most likely lost was the result of the placebo effect (you drink the green tea and maybe increase exercise or eat less, and the moving more/eating less caused you to lose weight).0 -
yeah, I'm not an expert on the metabolic impact of different foods, but I gave up a long time ago worrying about what things might boost or not boost my metabolism, what things take more calories to digest, etc.
It's less complicated to simply eat less calories.

Pure BS. You lost weight because you consumed less calories, not because you drank green tea.0 -
I really like TJ jasmine green tea which has a great light floral note.0

Green and white tea can both have huge benefits for health beyond just "hydration."
They are full of antioxidants that can slow ageing and their low-jitter caffeine content perks one up without making most people jittery.
Green tea drinking has been shown to help people lose up to 8 lbs per year without other lifestyle changes, although the participants had to drink several cups a day.
Green tea drinkers in China (or was it Japan?) have been shown to have lower rates of throat cancer despite smoking. Other cancers also haven't fared well under green tea in studies.
There is a huge amount of literature available on this. Check Google scholarly articles for studies which examine the effectiveness of green and white tea.

Pick one that tastes good to you! I do Tazo peachy green tea that I love. I drink it cause my office is cold and drinking warm water kinda sucks!0

I can't speak to any of the benefits, other than hydration, but one veeeery important thing about green tea: brew it correctly!
If you steep it for too long, it gets bitter, and then you'll hate drinking it. If you brew for the recommended 3 minutes (bonus points if you can get the right temperature too), then it's such a smooth, relaxing drink.
Once I learned how to brew it correctly, it became my favorite tea! I have at least 3 cups a day, and it helps curb my appetite because sipping warm tea solves the issue of eating because I'm bored, plus it quenches my thirst. When I think I'm hungry in between meals, I'm actually just thirsty!0 -

I'd like the see the research where people lost 8 lbs as causation of green tea because I think the more likely scenario is drinking three cups a day provided satiety and they are less calories. In that case, water works just as well and it's cheaper.0 -
I enjoy pure green tea, not the de-decaffeinated version! It helped my weight loss, because I switched to having a cup of tea instead of having a can of coke etc. and it gives me a feeling of being full so I snack less.
On its own, it's hardly going to have any noticeable effects on weight loss though.0
