I try to always pre-log and then update my food diary throughout the day to keep it accurate. I find pre-logging helps me to see where I'm at with calories at any point during the day to keep me from overeating or eating something I shouldn't. I know it was a big shocker to me when I post-logged my breakfast (i.e. Denny's) and it was about 1500 calories which is what I'm supposed to get for an entire day and I thought my breakfast would have been about 500-700 calories, not 1500. The pre-logging while on vacation has been a "diet saver" for me so I can at least keep myself at maintenance calories and hopefully not gain weight while on vacation.

I usually log what I'm planning to eat, and then adjusting it as I'm making it.

I have breakfast, make my lunch, then I log the whole day. I generally know exactly what I'm having for dinner by dinner time the day before, so pre-logging is easy. This way I know if I room in my day for extra treats, or if I'm coming up short on an a macro and I can adjust.

I log my meals before, but log my snacks as I go. I also make minor adjustments to my meals throughout the day. I tend to log my meals 3-7 days in advance. It works pretty well.

I prefer to log my whole day in the morning before breakfast. That way there are no surprises. This also helps me to make better choices and where my priorities lie.
