How to take your own measurements: tips appreciated

Hi guys,

I've recently started being active again on MFP and am hoping to not just look at the scale as a way to monitor progress.

I was hoping for some tips on taking my own measurements?
I'd like to measure my:
  • thighs
  • butt
  • waist
  • Hip

Also, any idea on what would be a good goal for cm lost per month?
Extra info: I have at least 10kg to lose to have a healthy BMI of 25 and go to the gym 4 times a week for 1-1.25, 3x cardio sessions and 3xweight sessions (1 session is solely focussed on cardio, 1 session is solely focussed on weights and the other 2 sessions combine both)

Cheers,
Nicola

Are you talking about circumference measurements? If so, it shouldn't be a problem taking them yourself.

Use a measuring tape. I'm not sure what other tips there could be.

I think that cm lost per month is not a good goal. I'm pretty anti- time-based weight and inches/cm goals since you can't directly control those outcomes.

Also do your neck, bicep, and forearm.
Measure at the greater circumference flexed and unflexed, if you want If you need to, to keep consistent, use your knee and elbow inside joint and measure up and down to the appropriate place.
Always use the same tape measure, I keep mine hung in the bathroom.

Use a self securing tape measure such as Myotape. Tape should be snug not tight or indenting the skin. Measure the largest part of each site. Be sure tape is level all the way around. Most importantly measure in the exact same place every time because even a slight move can make a big diff. There is no way to predict how much you can or will see. It won't be the same at all sites and it won't be linear from one time to the next. Good luck!
