Recording Daily

I feel like recording my daily calorie intake is becoming pointless during the week. I literally eat the same foods almost everyday. I suppose if I planned on eating something different it would make a difference.

I assume eventually we need to stop using our food diaries as a crutch and eventually work out ways off them? I mean I know I was under my calorie goal just barely today without having to input my calories.

I don't view the daily logging as a crutch. Eventually I would like to lose ten pounds, but that's just for vanity as I am in a healthy range. I log daily because I like to see trends, whether it be for the week or a longer period of time. I also like the idea of logging in the event I should have medical issues, the diary may be beneficial. For a while I was having intermittent stomach issues and I was able to see a common theme of what I ate when I had issues, that otherwise I probably wouldn't have thought of because my memory isn't great. On a daily basis I use the log to check my micronutrients as sometimes I go through cycles where's diet is different from the usual fair and I can see if I'm neglecting anything. Point is I use the dairy for other things, and thought I would post some non-weight/calorie related uses :)

You can use the site and its tools however you choose to. I think I may have to log for the rest of my life, but I'm ok with that. If I need a crutch to stay at a healthy weight, I have absolutely no problem with that. But if you don't, then for you that's perfectly ok, too.

Are you going to eat the same thing every day for the rest of your life? Are you eating the same thing just because it's easier to log?

If you always eat the same things and you are losing/gaining/maintaining weight the way you want then you could not log anything and probably be fine.
I eat different food almost every day. I'm going to log until I get to my goal at least. I don't know if I will log forever. It doesn't bother me to keep a food diary.

I think you have had enough problems eating to a calorie goal that fits your weight, size, and and eventual goals, including muscle retention, that counting calories, no matter how repetitive is essential to your good health, fitness goals and well bring.

    Don't become complacent.

    Cheers , h.

Not always eat the same thing, I just eat the same foods because I like routine. So I stick to basically the same foods each week. I dunno I never really thought why I eat the same foods. I mean I switch from minestrone to vegetable depending on what's in stock and sometimes my mom will make me homemade soup that I'll take home with me and I'll eat that that week (I love soup for lunch I always have it with some protein like hard boiled eggs or a chicken breast.) I mean it's not the exact same everyday but it essentially is at the same time

Well I feel comfortable enough were i don't think I need to log to lose weight - if I stopped losing or saw a gain id of course start logging again to see if maybe I'm miscalculating. Anyways, i think once you reach your goal it might be a good idea to switch your goal on mfp and then track your calories for maintaining your weight. Make adjustments if you see gains - learn to eat at a maintenance level. That's what I see the diary as, a tool to learn, we have to train our bodies to understand how much we can or should eat.

Well then you don't eat the same thing every day. And you're not weighing the chicken and eggs, so you don't know how much you ate each day.

I don't need to weigh them, I know roughly how much they weigh in g's from experience. Like when I eat cheese I know roughly what 30gs of cheese looks like (although I always cut 5-8gs less than 30 but I always put 30gs when I don't weigh it)

It sounds like it'll be worth your time to stop logging for a while and monitor your weight to be sure you're doing alright without the logging and weighing. Nothing terrible would happen if you gain, because you'd already know what you need to do for the scale to go back down. And, if you're continuing to lose, then you're doing alright. Just bear in mind that as you lose more weight your portions need to get smaller or you need to move more to keep your portions at the size they are now.

I think it'd be great to have the ability to eat intuitively and maintain my weight without logging. Unfortunately, that's not where I am at right now. Hopefully one day.

Why not just trial not logging for awhile. Or try logging less.

If it doesn't work out how you'd hope just start logging again for a bit.

I drive the same route every morning to work. I know all the cross streets and where the gas stations are if I need gas. Would it be ok if I stopped wearing my glasses? I mean they're just a crutch I'm relying on, right? Nothing will ever change on my daily commute. There's no reason I need to see clearly, right?

You're a grown up. You can own this. You are tired of logging. You find it tedious. Got it!
No, logging is not a 'crutch.' It's a viable method of weight monitoring along with weighing or measuring one's body or one's food.
If you don't want to do something, don't do it. But please be honest with yourself about why.

Do you need permission to not log? Okay. Granted. You don't have to log every day. If it works for you that's great. If it stops working you know what you need to do.

Sure, if I ate like that I wouldn't log either.

My problem lies when I stop logging and weighing, and change my eating and exercise habits.

I guessing all depends on how bad your eye sight really is. I legally don't have to wear my glasses while driving and I don't when I'm driving the same route I'm used to but when I need to read street signs (like the names of roads) I toss on my bad boy glasses

Yeah that's what I was thinking, doing it intuitively and if you aren't seeing results or seeing opposite of the desired result to log for a while again and see where you might have gone wrong.

Logging takes about 5 minutes of my day. I'd rather make it an easy daily habit personally.

    Same here.

I find that logging helps keep me accountable to myself. I'm trying to vary my diet, including different meals and snacks, and like to look at how my macros respond to that. If you don't find it useful, don't do it, at this point for me I can't imagine not logging.

Yep. I see it as 5 minutes less scrolling time on Facebook. Win.

You don't have to log if you don't want to...
