Knee noise

I posted a couple weeks ago about knee pain when doing squats/lunges and got lots of great feedback but now I've noticed something else.

The gym is loud so I don't know if I just noticed this because I was home and it was quiet or what, but when I bend down that same knee is making a sound like crumpling up a piece of paper. It doesn't hurt, but it's a crazy sound and I don't have to strain to hear it.

I do think I need to see a dr to make sure everything is ok, but just figured I would ask if anyone has experienced this. Also, if I should lay off the squats/lunges for a bit, is there anything else I can do workout-wise to make up for it?

What does your MD have to say about it?

As I said, I will make an appt with a dr when it is not a weekend.

It might be nothing but it might be something serious.
My personal "nothing" noise tends to be fluid after over-use, my "something serious" noise is bone on bone grating when I exceed the limit of what my injured knee will take.

Get it diagnosed properly. A sports Physio would be my choice not a general Doctor.
Knees are far too complex to hope to get a diagnosis from strangers on the internet.

After you get the diagnosis is the time to ask for exercise alternatives (part of the reason I would see a Physio not a Doctor...) but if squats and lunges are aggravating it then stop and give the injury a chance to heal.

Film your squat from the front and side. Watch your knees and heels. It may be that your knees are caving or your feet are rolling...

If you find your knees are caving, try keeping them aligned with the direction of your feet by pushing them outward.

It may be possible that you need to warm up a bit more before heavier lifts.

I have an orthopedist I use for a wrist issue, so I will make an appt to have the knee checked out. Just never heard such a weird noise before and thought I would ask if anyone has ever experienced it. Thanks.

It is called crepitus and is unlikely to be anything to worry about. However, you should definitely see a good sports physio to check it out and I would also ask the physio to check your exercise form and maybe give you some knee strengthening exercises.

Yeah, I've had a noise like that in both knees forever (like since college). Mine is kneecap scraping against bone, and that's why my knees would hurt. My kneecaps are hypermobile and I had no clue everyone's didn't wiggle all around like that, lol! Mine don't track right during movement.

But the noise is called crepitis (sp?) and doesn't always mean bad things. I had doctors (GPs) tell me it was nothing for years, so do watch out and use your gut about what's going on, too. If the doctor doesn't even listen with a stethoscope or wiggle your kneecaps around, I'd say she's not checking well enough. Since the noise can be nothing important, I think some docs must brush it off, IME.

I second the idea of filming your squats. My knees always popped when I did squats. Someone suggested I record my squats which helped me see that my knees were caving a little bit. Once I fixed my form the popping decreased quite a bit.

Ok. I'm definitely going to make an appt tomorrow and I will have them look at what I'm doing too. Really hope this is nothing because I've been getting so much stronger, and if this messes me up I swear I'll cry. :
