Chest pain during exercise

I just did a Zumba workout. I have not exercised since July, and that was just walking. During Zumba my chest started hurting. I don't know if that's normal or if I should be concerned. I'm 28 years old, 5'2 and 219 pounds. I'm considered morbidly obese and I'm a smoker. I hope that information is helpful.

No, that is not normal. You should consult a doctor (immediately if you are still in pain).

Chest pain can be serious. The right move would be to check in with your doctor or a cardiologist.

It's pretty much gone away. I have drastically changed my calorie intake recently. My body really isn't used to all this. I'll drink some water because I could very well be dehydrated because that Zumba sure made me sweat. I'll get in to my doctor as soon as I can to have them check me to see what exercise is ok for me to do.

I think u could do zuma but do the short class 20 minutes. For the first week than increase it. You should do low impact excercises. Start slow until u adjust. But you still see your doctor. Good luck. Don't give up keep up the good work.
  • Hey taramitchell, I too recently started excercising for the first time in months and while I was out for a jog during my first week I was having some chest pains as well. I'm 24 years old 210 lbs and a smoker as well.. Like how Margie said I started pacing myself gradually increase the distance I run and eventually I have not felt that same pain anymore.. I would still consult a doctor just in case to be on them same side. Good luck and keep it up!!

Excuse me but chest pain is potentially very serious. There is no way you can tell OP it is ok to do 20 min Zumba

OP: don't do any more exercise until you get a medical opinion. Chest pain is not normal for anyone, anytime.

Go to the doctor! First ... before you do any other exercise ... go to the doctor.

Chest pain is not like having a sore toe or something. Chest pain can be life or death serious. If you let the Zumba instructor know you were having chest pain (as you should have done) he/she should have had you seeking medical attention immediately.

I was doing a Zumba video at home. It was for beginners, but still really fast paced for me at times. I'm feeling perfectly fine now. When I let myself cool down and my heart rate got back to normal, the pains went away. I appreciate the advice. I suspect drinking monster prior to exercising may be a culprit, though. I didn't think to add that info in the post. Monster alone makes my heart race and adding the exercise just made it race even more.

OP: please don't downplay this. You said "I don't know if that's normal or if I should be concerned. " no it's not normal. Yes you should be concerned. If you truly thought it was your drink, why did you puts the question? Ask your doc if you should be drinking this stuff!

As I said, I didn't think to add that info in the post. I was exercising when the pain started. The Monster drink wasn't even on my mind at that time. I wouldn't say I truly think it was the drink. I just think it may have played a part. I already know doctors don't recommend the use of energy drinks. I will still be seeing my doctor just to be on the safe side.

I has chest pain years back and it turned out.to.be asthma.

It isn't always something very serious. Bit it's incredibly important to get a doctor's advice before you proceed.

You may find it isn't a big deal but it may be something potentially very serious too, and you can beat it and reach your fitness goals a lot better when you're well and following the right programme.

Energy drinks can cause a heart attack.

The only time I experienced any other chest pain than asthma was with Monster. Haven't touched the stuff for eight years now.
