Three weeks ago broke my heel and ankle. In a boot...can't do any weight bearing on my foot for two more months.doctor recommended aspirin to prevent blood clots but I hate medication of any type and their side effects. At the same time I'm freaking out worrying about getting a clot! Has anyone else who suffered breaks in their foot and-or ankle been advised to take aspirin or any blood thinner...not talking about after a surgery. Thanks...

Follow your dr's advice. It would be incredibly irresponsible of anyone to tell you otherwise.

One way to end up with more meds and more doctors is to not follow your doctor's advice. Follow the directions on the medicine itself: if it says take it with a full glass of water, do it; if it says take it with food, do it. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I completely agree with the above posters; follow your doctors advice and once it has healed get some physio. Ignoring your doctors advice would be daft hunni and lead to longer recovery, and if he thinks you're at risk of a blood clot, then possibly a worse outcome. Rest up and do as your doctor has said x

Get a second opinion if the concern is rational. If you're objecting out of some self righteous position of concern rather than a legitimate one, follow your doctor's suggestion.

My brother in law broke his ankle and ended up with a clot. Not only did it permanently damage the valves in his veins so that he will likely always have painful swelling, a piece broke off and lodged in his lung. He was off work for months. Follow your doctor's advice.

I had a friend's dad who died from a blood clot that dislodged (from his knee I believe) and got stuck in his brain (worst part is it could have been prevented according to the follow up lawsuit that won). The side effects of aspirin pale in comparison to dying from an unfortunate event. Follow your doctors advise, or if you really feel the need get a second medical opinion and he'll probably also tell you to take aspirin.

If you hate taking medication, just wait until see all the meds you get to take if you do throw a clot! I work in an ICU and people stopping their anticoagulants is a major cause of strokes and clots in various areas. Trust me you don't want one. Discuss with your doctor if you have issues with what they have prescribed.
