Well done on losing the first 3 lbs, that's amazing!
Weight fluctuates on a day to day basis, so whilst many people weigh themselves every day, you can't let yourself get down when you see it going up a bit. It can depend how much sodium you ate yesterday, whether you exercised (lactic acid built up in your system) and many other variables... The trick is to ensure that your overall pattern is on the way down rather than up.
Don't give up, it will take time to get used to the calorie counting and the weighing, and don't let one "gain" on the scales send you to the biscuit tin....

I have an 11 week old baby and am trying to lose too... Add me if you like..

    Good luck

First response to a diet is the body stores less glucose with attached water in the muscles.
Usually eating less sodium than normal too.

Big water weight drop. Some fat in there too, but nowhere near the whole amount.

First response to exercise is almost always water weight gain, blood volume increases, more carbs than normal are stored with attached water in muscles, water retained for repair if a good workout.

Depending on which response is more powerful - you can indeed gain weight at first on a diet with exercise.
    Water weight.

Also - weight loss is hardly linear - you will not lose the same amount daily.

Also - weight daily is fluctuating for all kinds of reasons - you will not weigh the same daily even if not in a diet and eating exactly what you burn.

Only valid weigh-in day to minimize known expected water weight fluctuations - morning after rest day eating normal sodium levels, not sore from last workout.

All other days will just show how variable your body can be.

So either weigh many times daily to get an idea of just how useless that is - or pick one valid day weekly to weigh.
Depends on your mental state seeing numbers move and realize that is totally valid response.

As to weekend, your prior weigh-in could have been day after eating lower sodium than normal, weekend was higher than normal or back to normal, and whala - sodium retained water.

Water retention due to the increase in exercise.

You mention nothing about a calorie deficit, but that you had not treats. Do you weigh all your food?

You just had a baby a month ago, your body has been though a lot. Be patient and take it easy on yourself.

In addition to what was stated above (weight loss not being linear), you just had a baby a month ago! Your body is still trying to recover, and hormones could also be causing the retention with your new exercise.

Then you may be eating more than you think you are.

Gaining weight during your diet is nothing you should worry about. In fact, it's perfectly normal. Your weight can be different every day and it's due to different reasons. Most common of them all is the fact that your body stores water, so you might look bigger and even weight more. But there's good news: it's easy to get rid of it. Sometimes, when your body goes through changes, like when you're on a diet, it responds in different ways. This is exactly the case with your body. But keep up with the good work; keep dieting and working out. You will see how after some time, your weight loss progress will be bigger and bigger.

Yes, because exercise burns carbs and therefore drops water weight, depending on intensity of it and how many carbs eaten before next weigh-in to refill.
Exercise if intense also retains water for repair, usually 24-48 hrs.

So after a rest day usually takes care of those 2 givens for water weight changes and allows you to reach normal levels again.

Only problem is if rest day is also eating Chinese takeout day, or pepperoni/sausage pizza day.

Hence my phrase being very exact.

You should. You can eat low cal/carb/sugar and still gain weight if you're eating too much.

Also you will retain water through sodium intake & because of your TOM (time of month). I gain 5 pounds, before/during my TOM, some women; gain more than that.

Fluctuations like this are normal - they still frustrate me, but I am slowly getting used to them after the good people of MFP have told me time and time again to relax when it looks as though the number has gone up.

Secondly, it is advised that you should not undertake any exercise activity for the first 6 weeeks after birth, so please take it easy on yourself :) x

Are you nursing? If so, you should be consuming extra calories as well as staying hydrated, not just looking to lose weight...

Agree with others that taking it easy for quite a while is important - I know everyone is eager to lose the baby weight but your body just went through A LOT of changes for the last 10 months, and hormones, etc will continue to fluctuate in the coming weeks.
