Feeling Discouraged

Well, for the last couple of months I've been trying to lose weight the slow and healthy way - a healthy diet and exercise. I was feeling great about my results so far (I've lost about 10 pounds). Today I went to the doctor for a physical. It was my first time meeting this doctor. The first thing he said to me after walking into the room and looking at my chart was, "Well, you seem like a nice enough girl, but you're WAY too heavy and overweight." Feeling hurt after he said this, I mentioned the weight that I have lost so far. His reply? "Well, that's not enough!"

It was so disappointing. All those early morning workouts and healthy packed lunches felt like a waste. After leaving the office, feeling completely defeated I almost felt like caving in and eating the mac and cheese that I desperately wanted for lunch. But then I realized, If I gave into the temptation I would just be confirming this arrogant doctors statements. So I opted for a salad with grilled chicken instead. Rather than let this whole thing bring me down, I'm going to use it as motivation, so that when I go for my next appointment I can step on the scale and see the numbers go down!!!

What's your motivation when life gets you down? How do you stay on track after a rough day/situation? If anyone else is feeling the same way, let me tell you, after making a smart choice at lunch I felt SO proud of myself!

I am so glad that you did not let his negativity get to you! Sometimes, people can be d*cks, and it is up to you to tell yourself "Hey, you know what? I am doing this for me, not for some a-hole doctor." So, keep that positive attitude and know that you are doing a darn good job at getting healthy and fit for yourself, not other people. That is definitely something to be proud of!

Some people (including doctors) are SO insensitive. You should be congratulated for not only every single pound you've lost thus far, BUT for MAKING THE DECISION TO LOSE THOSE POUNDS. That in itself is an achievement. I don't know what people think they're gaining from making someone else feel low.

Good for you for sticking to your guns at lunch. You deserve that good feeling.

Well in the silliest (and yet so true!) way I can say is.... and I quote Dori from Finding Nemo..."Just keep swimming!"
Just keep working on it. You'll get there :)

First of all - GREAT JOB on an 11 lb loss!!!! That's really good. I'm am unhappily stuck at a 10 lb loss, so you've got an admirer here.

Second of all - try to get past the hurt a little bit. Just analyze the doctor's statements. Was anything he said untrue? Was anything he said incorrect? Unsound advice?

SOME doctors believe that they are not meant to be your friend, or hold your hand, but rather to give you good, sound, correct medical advice. If you need a friendlier approach, with more hand holding, and perhaps greater tact, well .... you should probably find a different doctor. If you need honesty, and a kick in the pants, then he sounds like your guy.

You did good - putting it all out here on MFP - getting the hurt out. Skipping the mac n cheese. Yay you! Now, keep it up, and don't let the hurt/anger/shame/sadness win.
  • I'm sorry but that doctor sounds like an *kitten* !! Do not get discouraged by jerks like that. You are halfway to your goal so nothing that you have done has been a waste. Everyday you live a healthy lifestyle it is a bonus to you. Give in to temptation every now and then and call it a "treat!" You need to reward yourself sometimes for all of the effort and hard work. My motivation are my friends here and knowing that even if I only lose an oz it's one step closer to my goal weight.

Good luck and don't even give that doctor a second thought
  • omg! first of all i would like to say get a new doctor! the minute you said you had started your weight loss journey he should have been supportive and offered helpful advice not been negative... oh well yep use it as motivation! I have had days where Im feeling good about starting my weight loss then I will run into some one and they give me the "man you have gained weight since high school look" oh well keep your head up! we can do this!!!!

Wow that doctor is a JERK. Once you lose all that weight, you should march in there look him dead in the eyes and say I don't need you as my doctor you jerkface! D:< LOL. No but seriously I would change doctors. I would not like having a arrogant person as my doctor.

I usually get really motivated when someone calls me fat. I'm just so determined to prove them wrong. And you should be proud of yourself girl! Keep doing what you're doing and stay healthy. (:

Good for you that you did not let a doctor with a bad bedside manner get the best of you!

You have already accomplished a lot in a short time so take pride in what you have done. Don't allow any negatives to set you back and even it you do have a bad day, don't let that define you and allow yourself to get thrown off track. If you slip, tomorrow is a new day and just start over so that you don't allow your progress to suffer.

I lost a lot of weight (65 LBS) and kept most of it off by being better about "starting over" as soon as I start to slip. I slipped a bit more than usual on account of some recent health issues and lots of new drugs that I am on. You are young and taking charge of your health this early in your life is very wise. It will pay off in more ways than you can imagine so hang in there and stay positive!

I'd find a new doctor with a better bedside manner. The truth is the truth, but there is a way to present it. Geez. docs can be so arrogant.

Good for you on not throwing in the towel! You can do this.
  • Good for you for not letting that jerk get to you! And he is a jerk, even though he is a doctor because you told him of your new lifestyle and instead of encouraging you to continue your healthy lifestyle, maybe even reviewing it in detail with you and giving you some tips from a medical perspective, he was rude and inappropriate. I would find a new practioner. I just did via Yelp and I LOVE her. She is exactly the type of doctor I was looking for (I have blood issues). When I told her I had dropped 20 lbs in an effort to get healthier she "high-fived" me and said way to go and keep it up!

When I get down on myself (like today, when I weighed in and was up two pounds), I look at the path I have traveled and how far I have come, one little step at a time. And how much healthier I feel, how much better my clothes fit (hey, I can wear the clothes this summer that I couldn't wear last summer!), and how I am not on a diet but learning how to take care of myself for the long haul.

And finally, I go on MFP and reach out to my friends who are heading the same direction I am! They encourage me, tell me I can do it, let me know I am worth it and not to just measure myself on the scale but in all that I am doing to make healthy choices.

You are doing great and your efforts will be rewarded in a long and healthy life!

    POSITIVE THINKIN'....110% all the time...!

Life is too short to let annoyin' Doctor or anyone else - ruin your accomplishment of losin' 10 lbs...!

Keep your head held high...There are worse things in the world.

How tall are you? What is your ideal weight for your height - he may be right...

Best wishes on the next visit - Prove him wrong

Thanks so much for the encouragement everyone! There was a bit of truth in what he said but, like some of you have mentioned, there's a way to go about things! I think the hardest part was that I have been feeling so great the past couple of weeks, working out and eating healthy, and his comments just brought my self-esteem down so low! It's nice to hear some words of encouragement. I'm fairly new to this site and I am loving the support that it has to offer, somewhere where I can chat with people who are going through the same thing!

Wow......he said that about you needing to lose 10 more pounds? He'd love me then....lol Great job for making the healthy decision about lunch. I have those kind of remarks coming from my "family" so I know how it can hurt. But I'm doing this for me and no one is going to deter me from my goal of being healthy.......that's my motivation! :flowerforyou:

I'm 4'11" and weight 131 pounds. I definitely do not have an ideal BMI right now and still have some weight to lose for sure! I think the worst part of it all was that I did not go in there expecting the reaction I got from him! But, I guess it's just motivation so that when I go back in a month I can show him who's boss:tongue:

I'm 4'10" and I will NEVER reach the weight doctors say I should be. They say I should be 105 lbs...Thanks I like to have some meat on my bones! I'm also Hispanic...I'm naturally curvy and I do not want to look like a stick...thank you very much!

My 2 cents says find a new doctor. Your doctor should work with you, not against you. My mother has really been struggling to lose weight and lost 10 lbs over a year and a half. At her last checkup the doctor cheered and announced it to the whole office. My point is that diet and exercise are a part of being healthy. Obviously being overweight is detrimental to your health. I try not to focus on the weight so much, but rather my accomplishments (45 minutes on the treadmill, 6 mile hike, whatever). My weight seems to drop a bit, hold steady for 3 or so weeks, and drop a bit more. I figure that trying to make healthy food choices and be active is more important to me than the numbers. I can gain or lose 2 lbs in a day just from eating soysauce with my sushi! Good luck to you, you are doing great! I'd kill for the 10 lb loss, but for now will settle for my hikes :)

You can do this and I say keep on your current path. I think I would ditch him and nasty attitude also. It takes a lot of support for those of us on this path and your doc is supposed to be your partner in this.
