Starving on No-workout days!

So, I have found that if I don't burn at least 400 calories a day and eat back all my exercise calories, I'm STARVING all day long. I even get migraines towards the end of the day if I don't eat something and go over my calories. Now if you take a look at my diary, you'll see I'm not always the best eater but I try really hard to eat well on my non-workout days and make filling decisions. I have my activity level set to sedentary because when I started I really did just do nothing but sit on the couch all day, so I'm allowed 1200 calories a day before workout. I do feel like I've increased my activity all around because I weigh less and feel better. I've lost 34 lbs since March and now I've kind of hit a plateau.
Here's what I'm wondering. Since I've found myself at a bit of a stand still on the scale, should I change my activity level to light active so that I am allowed a little more calories so I'm not so hungry all day. I'm worried I'm actually going into starvation mode. Everything in me says, eat less calories, lose more weight, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yeah I think you should switch your activity level. Give it a shot and see if there are good results, if not you can always put your activity level back where it is now.
Awesome Weight loss BTW!!!0 -
I had the same exact thing happen to me...and as scary as it was I increased my calories. YIKES! And it worked! I just changed my amount of weight to lose from 2lb per week to 1.5lb per week. That gave me more calories to eat per day, I wasn't hungry all the time anymore, and the weight began falling once again. It only took one instance of starvation mode to know that I don't want to get to that point again. Good luck!0

As I understand it, once you have been consistently keeping your calories at a set level, then the body adjusts and your weight loss stalls out. Take a break from exercise for a day or two and let your calories go over just a little, and see what happens.0

I had a look at your diary: I think you are being harsh on yourself: Yes, the choices you've made sometimes arent the healthiest they could be but I think 90% of the people using the site are in the same boat. And where you have made less healthy choices (pizza, take out) you seem to have chosen healthier options or cut the portion size. Credit where credit is due!
Change your activity setting to lightly active, it'll give you a few more caloriesAlso, if your goal is currently 2lb a week, take it down a notch to 1.5 or 1lb a week. Having lost 34lbs you're on the hard road - out of the initial weight loss. Congratulations!

sorry to be blunt, but your diet is horrible. It's not the quantity of calories, but the QUALITY of calories. You eat a lot of junk, and your body will never be satisfied because it's not getting enough nutrition.
Your sodium is really high from all the junk processed foods. Your fiber is next to nothing! You really need to add more fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, etc.
Treat your body well, and give it something satisfying to eat!0 -

You're right on that one. Since summer started, I have done really poorly on my eating habit. I have been getting lazy. If you go back 3 weeks, my food was much better. You should have seen the way I was eating 6 months ago. I feel like I haven't done too bad concidering I've been obese my entire adult life. I'm aware it's not going to change overnight, and I'm not looking to overhaul my entire life right away. Rapid weight loss was never my goal.
I've changed my settings to lightly active and from 2 lbs a week to 1.5. We'll see how that works for me.0 -
Hi, You need to ramp up you intake of good foods, pasta, rice and vegetables. Your food choices will put you into an energy slump as they are mainly refined foods which will give you a hit, but a slump after.
Do you work full time? I know that makes it difficult to cook from scratch but your nutrient levels will be very low on this diet.
I speak from experience, and yes I do have ice cream and cheesecake and other naughty things, but I do try to find a balance.
Keep with it and try introducing a few new wholefoods and fresh fruit and veg to your diet.
Good luck with it and bloomin well done on the exercise!!0 -

I wish you luck!
And no, it can't change overnight. Just little steps, little changes.
But keep in mind, you also need to be an example for your kids. If you start them off right, eating healthy whole foods, then you are helping their future!0 -
A couple of quick thoughts.
1200 calories is really restrictive. You are on the cusp of not getting enough nutrients. Maybe you would be better off eating your actual MBR and stop logging your exercise so that becomes your deficit.
Also looking at your food diary you are not getting any fresh vegetables and fruit. You are eating a lot of processed foods. You could start by eating only food you prepare. But first thing I would do is increase your lean protein and make sure you getting a good serving of vegetables with every meal. That will help you stay satiated longer. Particularly if you make a few of the meals raw vegetables. Remember a calorie is not a calorie. Why? Because none processed or cooked food requires more digestion which results in more calories burned to convert to fuel. A raw vegetable will net less calories than a cooked one because of the increased energy needed to digest it. In hunter gather times the advantage of cooking was that it made a lot of low calorie foods quicker and easier to digest resulting in a higher net calorie gain. For the modern person fighting to control their weight, raw can be better.
Also try to pick carbs that are longer burning to increase your satiation level. A cup of whole sprouted quinoa is going to keep you from feeling hungry a lot longer a slice of white bread, etc. Foods that burn longer are going to help you keep from feeling hungry. Lean protein, complex carbs and fiber are you best tools from feeling hungry.
Also you getting a lot of processed sugar for someone such a restrictive diet. I would start tracking your sugar on your MFP to keep it done. Keep in mind when you eat less you have to eat better. With your current diet your body has to be malnourished because you are just not getting a lot of important vitamins and minerals and other macro-nutrients necessary to stay health.0 -

I'm actually a stay at home mom. I know that should mean I should be a Suzy Homemaker and be able to make wonderful, healthy meals everyday, but again...I'm fighting against YEARS of bad habit energy. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'll take all of it into concideration this week and I'll update you on how things work out!0 -
Get away from the processed foods, and put a lot of protein in your diet (hard boiled eggs or greek yogurt in the mornings) will keep you satisfied till lunch time. I was on the 1200 calorie restriction for a month, and I didn't ever feel hungry, because I was eating real food and staying away from the processed foods -- makes ALL the difference.0

That is a full time job!! Yes don't be hard on yourself, none of use is perfect. You deserve to feel happy and healthy and a few tweeks to some of your food choices will set you on the right road. Making your food diary public is a scary step and you can feel criticised, but people are only commenting for the right reasons. I was told off for eating cheesecake for breakfast and rightly so!!
