I Love Seeing the Red

OK, I will qualify this: I love seeing the red in my fiber that I track. More and more, I am realizing how important fiber is for many things:
  • it keeps you satisfied longer
  • it fills you up faster
  • it helps the body metabolize glucose better
  • it helps the digestive system (especially the bowels) work better

My Dad died of colon cancer which has been linked to a low fiber diet (among other risk factors). He was a "meat and potatoes" man who rarely ate veggies, fruit, whole grains, or legumes. He also was a heavy drinker and a smoker, although he did quit about 10 years before he passed away.

Because of the family history, I try to get at least 35 grams of fiber daily. I usually make it with the occasional exception. I just love knowing I am getting more than the RDA and I really try to get a mix of soluble and insoluble (aka "roughage") which is considered best for health.

Thanks for pointing this out. I definitely need to step up my game!! My number is pretty much always green. Yikes.

I'm always in the red for Fiber. I typically get between 50-60 grams and wonder if that is kind of too much....It seems to be okay as long as I'm getting enough fat.

You pointing this out made me look at my diary and guess what? I was in the red for just 2 days, close on 1 and nowhere near the recommended amount for the rest. That's just for this last week. I definitely need to increase my fiber intake. The red days were my better days. Hmmm, gotta step up my game, thanks!

I aim for red in fiber and iron (my "wake up call" was a bout of severe anemia). I don't mind seeing it in protein or fat. I am even OK with a few days of red in sodium. The only columns I don't like seeing red in are total calories and carbs because I have a max level of carbs (180 g) per my doctor in order to manage T2Dm. Even she says an occasional day of eating too many carbs isn't a bad thing, the important thing is overall consumption.

If anyone is going to try to up your fiber, make sure you do it gradually. Suddenly eating more, especially if you will be doing it with fiber-rich veggies and/or legumes, can have embarrassing gastric effects (basically gas or the runs . . . or both). I did up mine quickly and the effects went away after about 3 days. It seems that your digestive system has to re-learn how to digest/process fibrous foods.

I have never heard of anybody eating that amount of fibre, is it a supplement or something?

Me neither :disappointed: The guy at my store that sells them actually put me off of them... Something about the addition of palm oil??

I gotta know how she gets 150g in. That's an awesome accomplishment

Hahahah you guys know me and my quest bars ;). I actually bought like 10 boxes of the old formula when they were still available. I have 4 more boxes but once those are gone in a few weeks I will be done for real. Right now yes it comes from all the quest bars LOL

You're gonna go through Quest bar withdrawal  I've got 2 bars of the old formula just sitting there, but I've avoided eating them because I know once they're gone that's it, NO more

I completely relate to your love of Quest bars, they are yummy!

I love my quest bars too and I'm lucky enough to be on this site and read that they had changed formula, I think I've bought out a few retailers in the UK lol

I'm always in the red too. I usually eat a protein bar or two a day (my own homemade using IMO), but I've also been eating oatmeal and popcorn every day lately as well. Then there are things like veggies and bean pasta added into the mix.
