I'm only 5 feet tall and about to learn to ride a bike at the tender age of 38. I need a bike that is strong enough to hold 202 lbs and low enough that when, not if, I fall I won't hurt too much.

Thanks

I bought something like this at ****s Sporting Goods a couple years ago: http://www.diamondback.com/bikes/hybrid/2009-hybrids/edgewood-09/ It's a hard-tack and I've taking it on some rougher trails around town, mountains (not the high energy mountain biking though) and I ride a lot of the road. We're about the same age/weight. Cost around $300 on sale, as it was last year's model. Riding really helps my arthritis, so I highly recommend. Good luck!

I don't know why it won't let me type the nickname for "Richard"...

Best thing to do is go to a bicycle store. They can help you get one for your size and interests. The decision you need to make is mountain/beach or speed type bikes. I had the mountain type cause we have a lot of cobblestone streets. Go for comfort.

It depends on what biking you'll be doing. I have a Schwinn Cruiser with 7 gears. Where I live literally has NO hills so it's perfect for me. I am 5'2 so I understand the height thing, it is a little bit awkward to start but it's easy to do once you start!
Oh and mine was about $150.

I bought an XS Schwinn at our local bike shop and it's great. I'm really uncoordinated so I've wrecked a couple of times but never actually fell off since it was low enough. It's definitely strong enough to hold me. Bike shops are more expensive but they're really great about adjusting the bike to fit you properly.

You def want to check out a bike shop - they will steer you toward a bike for your height/weight. The shop in our area (Eddy's) is great - I got a Schwinn that is good for the trails - not mountain bike - but has fatter tires (than road bikes) for more stability. Have fun with your new toy - it is like being a kid again. Take your son for a bike ride with you - it will be amazing. PS: Be sure to get a comfortable seat

Thank you for your advice. I will definitely check out a bike shop. I think I need to expand my physical activties. Getting bored with my current ones.
