Do you change calorie intake in proportion to your weight lo

Hey guys, hoping for some advice.

I'm just wondering if I should be re-calculating my calorie intake at various stages of my weight loss (every 5pounds, 10 pounds..).

My reasoning behind this is that with weight change will come a BMR change. I calculated that my initial BMR was around 1400 - 1500. Out of interest, I calculated what my new BMR would be once I'd reached my goal; it is closer to 1200-1300.

So this led me to think that I should be altering my overal intake the lower my weight goes; in order to maintain the same deficit and thus the same weight loss progress.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

  • I have been entering my weight into my profile and it has been recalculating my calories for me. I've lost 15lbs so far and it's decreased my calories by about 60 or so cal so far.

If your updating your weight change then they system will automatically make changes. If you're doing more exercising than when you started you may need to change your activity level.

MFP will do this automatically at certain points. When you log your weight it will ask if you want to re-calculate your information.....so enjoy the higher cals while it lasts :-)

When I entered in my new weight, it asked to recalculate it and I clicked yes, but it didn't change anything. Weird.

Depends on how much your weight change is. A few pounds isn't really gonna change it. I'd suggest every 10 pounds. I'm not positive about that because I manually dropped mine lower than the system set

Me too, but I think this is because I was already at the lowest 1200 and MFP won't recommend going lower than 1200.

Thanks, that's all really helpful. I'm wondering, though, if you manually entered your daily cal intake, does it still recommend?

I think every 5 pounds should be right for me, since I don't have that much to lose. I'm okay with re-calculating this myself, but it would be nice if MFP did it. haha

MFP asked me to recalculate my calories after I lost ten pounds, I think it said it would ask me to do this every time I lost 10 more.

What is your calorie intake set at now? The system will never set below 1200 for anyone no matter what!

Yeah, it was when I first hit the 10 pound drop. I clicked okay and then it didn't adjust anything. And once I entered in a new weight again, it asked once again, but it didn't go through or something. Oh well. No biggie as of right now. I usually try to stick with the 1200s.

MFP set my calorie intake at 1200 initially, but I was really sluggish and getting little dizzy spells. I changed my activity level to moderate, and MFP upped my intake to 1300, which coincides with my BMR. I feel much better now.

However, I manually changed the percentages of carbs/protein/fat so I'm not sure MFP will prompt me to change calorie intake when I drop 10 pounds.
