What is your trick to making protein powders taste good?

I have vanilla flavor right now and I've tried shakes and they all taste nasty to me. They are always too thick and too sweet.I think it would be more fun and motivating if I knew of some ways that actually tasted good. Please share your ways if you can.

Have you considered a different brand? I'm using muscle pharm combat cookies and cream and even mixed with water it tastes pretty good. Also try adjusting the amount of water (or milk) you mix with.

    Buy good tasting ones...

Trutein at bodybuilding.com is awesome. I have Choc PB (awesome), Cinnabun (great for protein pancakes), Pumpkin Pie (so yummy mixed with frozen banana), Mocha Caramel (not my favorite, wouldn't buy again). I'm trying the PB Marshmallow Cookie next!

Also, what are you mixing in with yours? I use unsweetened almond milk, one cup per scoop of protein powder. I found cashew milk made my shakes too thick and I couldn't handle the texture.

To be honest, I've yet to come across a decent tasting protein powder. I've tried several, including Quest, Trutein, Jay Robb, and a couple others that are highly rated on taste. I think I just really like foods a lot less sweet than most people do. Plus, I loathe stevia.

So far, I've done a couple of things to improve the taste that work decently.

    1) Buy unflavored protein powder and doctor it up yourself. Works, but I always end up with more calories added than I'd like. On the other hand, I can cook with the stuff and have it not ruin the taste of my food, so that's a bonus.

    2) Buy a basic flavor like vanilla and add things like cocoa and instant espresso powder to counteract the sweet. Vanilla protein powder + more water than usual + ice + double shot of espresso is not half bad.

    3) Whatever you do, make your shake ice cold. The colder a food, the less you taste the sweet.

I went with an unflavoured sprouted Brown rice protein powder. I much prefer it to whey for digestion and anything sweetened for taste. It s just kind of nutty-tasting. Bit grainy but fine. Or the brand I got is. 20g protein per serving, 80 cals. My drink is that with 1/2 cup almond milk (I like plain but vanilla's ok, Mich better than protein powder vanillas ), 1/2 cup blueberries, 1/2 small banana, comes to less than 200 cals

I just get a basic chocolate flavored one from wherever (not brand loyal.) I like it mixed with coffee or coconut flavored yogurt. Mix it, let it set up in the fridge for 30 minutes or so, and it's good to me.

I too love trutein, but wouldn't necessarily recommend it for someone who doesn't like sweet because I can say for certain, the cinnabun is definitely sweet.

Wow thanks everyone. It is nice to have a few more ideas I really couldn't think of any. Everything I have tried was just gross. I too do not like sweet stuff, I will probably making them in the future with ice, I didn't know that lessons the sweetness.

I've had absolutely horrid protein and I've had addictive-ly delicious protein, so I guess you just have to find one you like. I also love Trutein but it is sweet. I found a tasty one at Walmart from Six Star, it's a mixed berry protein smoothie mix. It's more of a meal replacement than straight protein, and it's not very sweet (I actually add Splenda to it because I like them sweet). I love it mixed with green tea, strawberries and a bit of Greek yogurt to thicken it up a bit. I've switched to Trutein vanilla bean until I can find it again.
