NSV: Since I was 7yrs old I have suffered from week long severe bouts of depression and suicidal thoughts at least once a month (a combination of environment and genetics). A few months ago I debated whether or not to try medication. Everytime I see my mom and my brother I am reminded of the long term effects of these medications and I just cant bring myself to try them. Anyway, since I now have a mostly "clean" diet, avoiding added chemicals and processed foods I have noticed a significant change. I have not had any long bouts of depression in over 2months! I have had a couple of bad days that I was able to move past. I have also never been a sound sleeper, often averaging 4 or 5 hrs a night, now I am sleeping 7-8hrs and the quality is much better. My skin is clearer, and my nails and hair are healthier. Our bodies are so forgiving, but they are begging us to take care of ourselves! Im not suggesting that those with mental health issues toss out their medication and try this, but if you struggle with depression and u r not on meds, try cleaning up your diet. We cannot ignore the connection between what we put in our bodies and how they function as a result.

Marie that is awesome that you have been able to improve not only your physical health but your mental health in such a short time. This is proof for those that think that being healthy is not important or that what you eat does not affect you in any way. My friend and I at work have decided that our saying is "you are what you eat" for this entire challenge. So if I want a donut I remind myself that I am a jelly donut with a bunch of junk in the middle. It's amazing how well it works to keep us motivated to do better. Keep up the great work.

that is awesome! and you are so right about the connection.. over the past week when i have been eating not so healthy foods (damn grad parties/TOM) I have felt irritable, tired and achy!! I know its the lack proper food and excercise, Thank you for reinforcing that in my mind it just proves to me even more that i need to clean it back up and get it together if I want to feel better!

Good for you! I completely believe that a good diet can change your mood and well-being.
I've struggled with a lot of negativity too, and when I switched to eating all organic, plant-based foods I felt soooo much better. I became a better wife, more clear-minded, more organized and motivated, and I feel much more hopeful about the positive outcomes of my life.
I'm so glad eating well has helped you too! Isn't it amazing how closely tied our physical body is to our spirituality and mental well-being?

Thanks guys. I do the best I can, if I wasn't so broke I would eat 100% natural and only organic but I cant. My diet right now is mostly steamed vegetables, fruits, and lean meats...not really anything that has a shelf life besides rice, beans and whole wheat pasta

Thanks for posting. We certainly are what we eat, and we should all take better care of the one body and mind we are given :-) It is so great that you are without meds, and feeling so good. Wonderful example for others, and most importantly, you child. Keep it up! You are gorgeous!

I was in pain every day...sharp stabbing pains, also numbness in my fingers and toes. Muscle weakness. My hips hurt, my knees hurt. I had random crawly feelings on my skin. Sharp stabbing pains and more sharp stabbing pains...did I mention sharp stabbing pains? My Neurologist said I had a neurological condition similar to MS and another said something similar to Fibromylgia. Just getting through my days became difficult. Every day things were getting harder to do between the pain and weakness, i became more and more inactive.

Then after reading some things on line etc...I decided to try diet and lifestyle changes. Since then I have cut out most (97% ) of processed foods and switched to organic when ever I can, including cleaning supplies. This made me feel much better but not 100% until I quit smoking...cigarettes have over 500 chemicals in them that we never even think about. I quit smoking, I have been working out and getting stronger every day. I am getting my health back and have not had a pain in weeks (aside from the normal muscle stiffness caused by getting used to working out lol) I feel stronger and healthy. I can’t tell you what a big difference I feel.
Everyone says as they diet...food is fuel....I strongly believe that -not only should you maintain calories to fuel your body and eat nutritiously but you should also avoid processed foods, added chemicals and dyes as well as preservatives..it’s poison and if food is fuel and you consume these, you are fueling your body with poison.
I am happy you are feeling better and strongly believe you are on the right track....hoping you have continued success in treating yourself with diet and lifestyle changes.
