I am going on my 5th week of dieting. First week I lost 4 lbs, second week I lost 1. Now I have been at a stand still. It's driving me crazy! I watch what I eat, I work out 4x a week- cardio & strength. I want to lose a total of 20 lbs. Am I being too hard on myself? It's very discouraging that I've stayed the same for 3 weeks. I'm very upset. Help!

    Don't DIET. That's your problem.

Are you logging everything you eat/drink with as much accuracy as possible, including using a food scale? Are you eating back your exercise calories, and if so how much of them?

I am not eating back my exercise calories. And I do lax on logging every single item. However, another problem I have is, 3 years ago I lost 20 lbs & it was so easy! I lost a pound a week, sometimes 2. This time around I'm trying harder & working out harder, & I'm at a stand still. So I keep comparing everything to 3 years ago. :-/ and I was lax' d on logging food intake then as well.

In order to lose consistently, you need to be very consistent with your logging. Use a scale and weigh everything. If you eat it, log it. Weight loss isn't linear, so some weeks you'll lose more, others less, but if you're not losing or even gaining, chances are you are eating more than you think.

Watching what you eat and exercise doesn't always = weight loss.

You are on your fifth week and your goal is 20 pounds. What are you doing wrong?

    SLOW DOWN.

This is not a race. You don't HAVE to have it gone by next month, you didn't gain it in a month.
Stop, evaluate what you want out of life and then start looking at sustainable lifestyle changes to get you there.

    Maybe this will help:

But seriously, if you only have 20 pounds to lose... take your time and do it in a healthy sustainable fashion.
    Please

if your body is starting to adjust, then mix up your routine. Increase intensity or weight or reps or even do other exercises that you haven't done to make it more challenging. And 3 years ago is a long time, our bodies go through different changes during time. Just keep at it, but I really feel you need to mix up your routine and make it more challenging.

Thank you for all your responses. I am definitely impatient. That is a major issue of mine. And I will try to do better at logging all my food intake. I also think I need to drink more water. A lot of discussions on here talk about that.

Every single time my weight loss stalled, I always traced it back to my logging slacking off.. I need to weigh everything I eat and be as honest and precise with food logging as possible.

5 lbs in 5 weeks sounds pretty good to me. Remember muscle weighs more than fat, maybe your building muscle. Don't worry what the scale says just focus on healthy eating and exercise and you'll get there.

Well maybe youre MORE lax now or eating more than you think. Estimations are fine if youre not concerned or watching calories. But I dont eat anything I dont log with as much accuracy as I can because it matters that much to me.
Being more accurate with your logging is what you need.

Like I said, I was very lax' d on logging my food, so my diary is not that great or accurate. I just kept comparing my weight loss success I had 3 years ago to now, & at that time I did not keep my diary up either. So I thought I could do the same. But I'm learning on all these forums that it's very important to log all your food intake. I have to work on that!

Agreed 5lbs in 5 weeks is very good, and agreed don't worry unless you are stagnant for a month or more. You didn't pack on a few lbs of muscle in a few weeks, I wish it were that easy.

I would say most of us can say that is the biggest factor. Keep at it.
