..... To be able to stay within my calories, yet eat want I want within limits. Bread, fat, sugar. I'm so used to depriving myself, or doing a crash diet. Anyone else?

I've understood CICO for as long as I can remember, yet I still didn't have a healthy grasp on not depriving myself.

2 years later, I'm good. What's even better is that now I can walk away from food too. I'm not deprived, and I know I don't have to eat it now. There's always another day.

My husband had an ice cream sundae last night. I could have fit a small serving in my calories. I got the bowl out, placed it on my scale, and then said never mind. It just wasn't worth it. Instead I had 50 calories of tootsie rolls (leftover from Halloween).

I remember wondering if eating fried chicken, cheesecake, burgers, fries would make me gain weight, despite eating within calorie limit.I experimented for a while, didn't gain.

I love being able to eat these things and maintaining my weight and health. I used to irrationally believe these foods would never have a place in my diet again

decades of poor eating, makes it tough to get used to what you can do and still maintain/lose.
Will power is a daily struggle but now when I do eat food to my needs, not my wants it tastes so much better. I want to be healthy and not fall victim to my petty desires to stuff my face without limits.
Most days, like yourself however, I feel like this is actually pretty easy, and I wonder how the heck I got so out of shape in the first place.

I'm happy knowing that even if I had a whole family sized chocolate bar all to myself, it wouldn't be the chocolate making me gain weight but just the excess calories. And even then I could still save the situation by eating fewer calories the next day or something... SUCH a relief!

Agreed, admittedly I am eating low carb, but I can enjoy a lot of the foods most people tell you to avoid losing weight. The fundamental truth is to lose weight you must consume less calories than your body can burn.

Same! I try to eat healthy frequently, but definitely having Chinese food tonight.

This was after years of thinking I had to starve myself to see results. I'm much, much happier now

I'm new to CICO, a reformed 'dieter' and I totally agree!! Very odd!! I try to eat healthy foods but still throw in the occasional chips and ice cream in a deficit and still lose. Odd! But I'm lovin it!!

Yes! I have maintained for over a year now, but it still feels strange that it is so effortless. I am mindful about my food choices, but because I know it will make me feel good, not because I "think I should". I serve myself my favorite foods in proper amounts, which leaves me satisfied, so it feels right to stop eating when the plate is empty.

Trying to eat low fat and being afraid of sugar for over 30 years does something to you that is not good :s

In my case I cant eat everything I like. I've just got my cholesterol level back to normal by cutting out or severely cutting down on high fat things like cakes, ice cream, biscuits, chocolate, sausages and cheese [my favourite]. I will have to more or less stick with this regime forever, otherwise my cholesterol will rise again, even though I may not be overweight.

With this apps I learned that "to much calories=weight gain"

Yes, this amazingly simple concept has been a game changer for me. Keeping a running total throughout the day with MFP has made it doable- so easy to punch in a food and weigh your options!!
