The gym that is. I am thinking about joining the family y to help with my weight loss. I would dedicate myself to go at least 4 times a week with my schedule. I can take my daughter alone to the daycare there which I know she would enjoy. They also have some kid activities I would love for her to join (dancing, gymnastic, etc) which I would get a discount but Im trying to figure is it worth it. For now, I have been walking the neighborhood and doing Zumba dvd at home. We also have a mini gym at my job with the treadmill and elicpital for free.

Well, ask yourself this: are you getting everything you need at home? If so, then it may or may not be worth it. But then again, I'm pretty high on the Y. I used to be a member, and there are a lot of benefits to it. Just for that reason alone, I'd encourage you to look into all the activities and programs they do offer.

I personally do not belong to a gym and work out at home, but that's only my preference.

Some places let you do a 2 week free trial. You could try it out and decide at the end of that time if you think it would be worth it. Good luck!!!

I agree.........because of all they offer, I really would love to join. I was a member before I had my daughter. Now that she is 2, I think it would benefit both of us. Fun for her and losing for me!

Great idea. I would call and see if they offer the trial. That way, I can see how my daughter reacts to the daycare there while I workout and also if I can get a better workout than at home.

I agree with the free trial thing. Do it for a week or 2 and see if actually fits into your life better.

    Good luck!

I love my gym time, I have never been able to stay on track doing anything at home. So gym time is ME time.

I love having the option to go to the gym (and if I don't, I consider it a donation. hehe) Some gyms (I love 24 hour fitness) have month-to-month options, so you don't have to sign up for a long contract. It's pay-as-you-go, which is fantastic. Ask them because they might do it since they'd rather have a client for a few months than not at all.

I already figured it out for us. We joined Future Fitness which does not allow you to cancel your membership without waiting a month and submitting a hand signed form. Just make sure you read your contract. We are doing the 3 months for $20 trial right now, but are going to join fully in August. Their contracts are really crazy. They require a credit card on file in order to join the gym and if you want to cancel your membership, make any changes, or prepay your dues you have to do it before the last three days of the month. There is also an annual fee. From what I have read though a lot of gym contracts are like this.

I hate my stupid gym (way too crowded) and they seem to be willing to enroll an unlimited amount of members.

If it weren't such a good deal ($299 for two years = 24 Hour Fitness deal from Costco) I wouldn't go near the place.

Can you try it for a month and see if it is something you like without making some kind of huge time & money commitment? For me...I don't do a gym. In some respects, I think I would enjoy it. But I am always aware that it probably would almost double the amount of time I would need to set aside to work out. Not sure if I want that. I do have a treadmill at home and use that almost daily.

can yo do a trial month for a smaller cost....that's what I did it ws $10 and then I found I went all month but 4 days and decided then it was worth it I too have free weights and a treadmill and an eliptical machine at home.....sure i used those before I found the gym and still do when the kids are home sick and I can't lug them to the gyms daycare, but now I would rather workout there. Found a ton of buddies and a bunch of different classes and found I love spinning.

It's worth a trial month if they offer it.

Not sure what your plan is, but seems like you have been focusing strictly on cardio.

If that is going to be your only form of exercise, I wouldn't bother. There are plenty of much more enjoyable ways to get your cardio in that spending time on the elipical or the dreadmill.

Now if you are looking to ad strength training, (which is a good idea), then yes, sign up.

You may even find other fitness classes to take. Meeting new freinds and workout partners.

One of my goals overall was to become a more active person and to me that meant working out at a gym every so often. I joined Crunch because they were only ten bucks, but I didn't need a pool or child care.

I agree that if you aren't getting enough from home or want a change of environment to try out a gym or the Y.

I love the gym...I make it 4 days a week no problem...there's no distractions there like there is at home. I get in, get my *kitten* done and get out...I don't stand there and stare into the mirror or B.S. with the trainers. I know what I have to do, and I go do it to the best of my ability. If you're looking for a good routine go to bodybuilding.com (don't be afraid of the name, you won't look like a she-man)...I lift weights 2 days a week and pushups/situps/etc 2 days a week...plus cardio 4 days a week. Good luck! I hope you enjoy it!

not sure if anybody else mentioned it but many Y's offer month to month membership. this may be good if a class you want to take comes up, or an activity for you/your daughter is being offered.

I personally think a gym IS worth it. But it depends on your goals and what you have at home. It is worth it to me because my goals are to not only lose body fat, but also build lean muscle mass once I have cut the fat. And I need barbells and weight machines for this. Squats with dumbbells are limiting (for example) because that move depends on your wrist strength...and my wrists are puny compared to my quads, glutes, and hams.

Now if all you want to do at the gym is cardio, then I might say that it isn't worth it. You can do cardio at home with videos from Beachbody or Zumba and it would be cheaper.

    That's just my opinion though.
