My husband and I are thinking about planning an east coast road trip for sometime next year. I'm looking for suggestions of places to visit between Philly and Bangor, ME(my aunt lives there). We would like to stay as close to the coast as possible. As of now we know we'd like to stop in Boston and a friend recommends Rockport, MA. Any ideas or comments?
Thanks!

Newport, RI is gorgeous, or anywhere in Narragansett, RI where lots of the beaches are is pretty nice too!!

The most amazing views I ever saw on the east coast was on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Other than that I loved the end of the Apalacian trail in Georgia with the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi.

Booth Bay Harbor in Maine is a small fishing village that we stayed in and loved. We also loved Martha's Vineyard, Nantuckett and Cape Cod.

I love Maine too. We'll be heading up to boothbay harbor this summer for a few days.

York beach, Wells, Kennybunkport, Old Orchard, Rockport, Camden, Belfast are all wonderful....but since you'll be up in Bangor, you'll have to check out Bar Harbor/Acadia area. It'll be a nice day trip from your Aunt's place.

Oh and Portland is also nice, if you go, you MUST stop in Freeport at the LL Bean flagship store, it's a great area to just walk around and explore the little shops.

And if you're into maps, the Delorme Map store is very close to Freeport.

If you're stopping in Mass, then Salem (witches) is a neat place to stop, along with Gloucester, and Rockport.

I don't really recommend the Cape area, unless you'll want non-stop traffic and aggravation. Others might disagree, but I haven't been to Cape Cod (unfortunately) in years because of the horrible traffic, but if you're staying a few days, and want sandy beaches, then it might be something to consider.

I live outside of Philly. Still a little bit of a drive to the New Jersey coast, but Cape May NJ is beautiful, or Avalon. If you get into Philly, of course check out the historical sites like Independence Hall. Outside of Philly is Longwood Gardens which people come to see from around the world, www.longwoodgardens.org

Definitely go to Boston. A lot of people say the mountains in Vermont are awesome, but I haven't been there...

Check out Martha's Vineyard and/or Nantucket if you can! They are awesome! You can take a ferry over there with your car.

I would say Mystic, Foxwoods or Mohegan Casino's these are all in CT and close to one another.
The cape is nice and Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

If your looking for a slight "in-land" detour on your trip . . . I would suggest a ride through the Kancamagus Highway (NH). It is a beautiful and scenic drive through the White Mountains of NH. There are so many other places to go and see/visit once you're in that region of NH.

*If the weather is nice and clear, a trip up the Mt. Washington Auto Road will provide a lifetime of memories !!!!

    Safe Travels !!!!

I totally and absolutely recommend checking out Orleans, MA which is wear my family has a place. Very beautiful little town area! And Cape Cod in general is absolutely amazing. They have a great tour about the pilgrims and the beaches are amazing. Provincetown is also a super epic place to visit and a total cape town experience... you have to top it off with some good whale watching! :D

I LOVE the coast. Enjoy yourself.
