Questions about P90X

Hey Everyone! So I am currently training for my 3rd triathlon so I am in pretty darn good shape. I do not have the muscle definition and I know I need to get better about my weekend splurges.

On to the question- I am thinking after I finish this race I was going to buy P90X for me and my fiance to try. I have heard that if you are not in decent shape you can't do it. I am not afraid for myself, just worried my fiance wont be able to get onboard. Also has anyone gone from doing a totally different type of working out to P90X? I guess I am scared I wont like it.

Any Advice would be great.

I bought it and never tried it. I am fairly out of shape but I did pass the assessment in the booklet. But I didn't have the time for the routines, 60-90 minutes is a lot for me and I'd have to wake up really early to do them because my toddler is a horrible napper.

I sold my P90X and got Chalean Extreme and I look forward to those routines. I'm in the first month but the routines are 45 minutes or less and I feel it the next day. Plus all I needed to buy were adjustable weights (ore resistance bands) which I got for $20 from WalMart. I heard that P90X requires a lot of additional equipment.

You don't have to be in the best shape to do it. You just have to want to do it! It is a hard workout even for those in shape. But you can do it and if you do it together, it can be done. I know people who had not worked out and started it and they loved it.

As far as not liking it, there is a 30 day money back guarantee, no questions asked. If you can make it past a week, you will love it.

I started with Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred before jumping into P90X. It was a good warm up because it got you in the mindset of working out everyday, gave enough strength to be able to do a full pushup, and presented some basics on using weights.

However, I know of people that went from zero (couldn't do a push up even from their knees) to P90X. The videos always give the option to modify moves, use resistance bands instead of the pullup bar or weights, and push pause when you need to.

I'm curious as well...I've been tossing around the idea, but I'd hate to spend that kind of money and then hate it

Totally agree, you have to WANT IT!

At 214 I couldn't even do one pushup. I'm now finishing my 5 round and am 180. Just commit and do it.

I did P90X for about a month. I really like the workouts, it was the time for each dvd that I couldnt stick with. You dont have to be an elite athlete to do P90X. Do the assestment first, but there is a modifier that you can follow until you feel you can "play along with the rest". It will certainly help your running time. I started running about 6 months before doing P90X and it improved my time by almost a min a mile (5K distance) with not really changing anything with my running. Highly recommend it esp if you are going to do it with a partner

It is one of the best programs i've done, EVER. You don't need to be in shape, start with light weights or few reps and build up to heavy. I started barely curling 15lbs and now i can curl 40 lbs. So...yeah, there are definately ways to make it easier

I am fairly active but not in best shape at all. I need to lose around 50lbs still. With that said, I do enjoy a good work out. I am on day 20 of p90x. My hub and I really like it.
Now there are days when I wish I could get it over with or don't do as well as other days but I can keep up, most of the time.

When I first started I did 15 push ups on my knees. I couldn't even do 2 regular push ups. I tried but I think my mentality was "I can't do it." P90x made me want to push myself and I'm proud to say I am now doing 10-12 regular push ups... on each type (there are like 100 different type of push ups you have to do- okay, I'm exagherrating but there's alot!). It's pretty cool to see the improvement.

Thanks for the response everyone! I think I am going to go for it. Do I need to buy all the extra stuff? I think we are going to cancel our gym membership for a while and try this and see what happens.

I completed P90X Classic and lost 25 lbs. I'm currently on my second round and I am trying to lose another 25-30 lbs. However, I have started a "Hybrid" routine. I am also training for the Army Ten Miler, so I swap all of my cardio workouts for running. Plyometrics is a tough routine, but fun (Jump training).
Like everyone else said, there are options for everything.

You only need a set of hand weights, I use 3, 5, 8 and 10 lbs. a yoga mat and a pull up bar (I think $45 at any sporting goods store or Wal-mart). Or... you can invest in a good set of weight bands. They always have someone working out with the bands. These are fairly inexpensive and a good way to start if you are not comfortable with lifting weights.

Some of the discs are long, but you can choose the option to just do the exercises without all his talking. I actually enjoying his silliness!! Keep in mind, it will be hard, but it does get better! Just keep pushing play! Make sure you take before and after pics and measurements!
    Good luck!!

I sound like a broken record around here but I found all my stuff at Ross. My husband bought the p90x bands ($40 plus s&h) so I decided to go the cheaper route.

I found everything I needed at my local Ross'. I found a pack of 3 bands (light, med, heavy) for $8. I also found push up bars for $7, my hub bought the iron man chin up bar for I believe either $15 or $20 there. They have yoga mats as well. And they always have 5-8 dumbbells. (bought 5lb Reebock one's for $3 a piece). So I'd go raid them first before looking anywhere else. I am obsessed with their exercise section which isn't too big usually but it's everything you need. Now if they only had heart rate monitors...

Good point about the HR Monitor!! I first used just a wrist one and that did not work out well as it kept shutting off during the routines. I went and purchased a Sportsline DUO Monitor with Chest strap. It was $60 at ****'s Sporting goods store. It keeps track of calories burned, fat burned and HR.
