Many people feel avocado is so healthy but I am concerned with the extra fat and calories they contain. What is considered the proper portion in a serving?

An avocado doesn't contain "extra" fat and calories, it is what it is. The proper portion would be one that fits with the rest of the fat and calories you're eating in a day.

Have you already had a lot of calories or fat (or will you later)? Have a smaller portion. Have you not had much? Have a larger portion.

Just weigh it and log it. Sometimes I eat a quarter of an avocado, sometimes I eat half an avocado. Sometimes I even eat a whole avocado. There is no generic "right" amount -- it has to be considered in balance with the rest of your calories and fat for the day.

I just weigh and log. Prelog if it is a concern for you.

I usually eat half of an avocado a day. If they are tiny, I will eat a whole one. Usually 1.5-2 oz per meal, sometime 3 oz. It depends on my fat macros for the day really. You can always cut some and wrap it up tightly in some saran wrap or cling wrap, then place it in the fridge to eat later or the next day. I slice some and eat it with my morning eggs. I put some slices in a sandwich yesterday. You can always cut up some slices, drizzle a teaspoon or two of olive oil, and some salt, pepper, and garlic powder or whatever other spice/herbs I like. Avocado is very good for you nutrient-wise, and for your skin.

So, the thing is, there is nothing unhealthy about eating fat and calories.

I mean, you have to eat to live, right? And fat generally is more filling per calorie consumed than (say) starchy food like bread. Or that is my experience anyway. I feel more sated - more full - after eating a 500 calorie meal featuring the 'extra' calories of avocado than I would if those calories came from corn chips. So long as I stay near or under my goal for the day, and keep my macros more or less in line, I can get those calories from whatever source.

For a sandwich, I have about a 1/4 avacado. This was 34 grams last time - 57 calories of yumminess and only 5 g of fat.

(Assuming the entry I picked was correct - could not find a system entry.)

I don't know about proper, but the truth is I eat it all. But think about what it might be replacing. On a sandwich; cheese. In tuna salad; mayonnaise. In dip, like guacamole; everything else. Avocado is about 45 calories per ounce. Cheese and mayonnaise are about 100. Plug in your favorite dip.

How can you not have heard of good fats?

I read recently that its recommended that you eat half of one a day. Use as your dressing, cheese, mayo, etc.

I use the wholly guacamole packages that are the 100% hasa avocado without seasoning and are measured in 100 calorie packets (I dont weigh them as I don't have any problems losing weight without weighing food so they might be a tad off I don't know ). I have a hard time getting my eating avocado timing right so I know these are always good. I make room for it because avocado is good for you, I like it, and I find it filling. I like top black bean burgers with it.

Higher in calories but very filling.
I'd usually have 1/2 if it was part of a meal, but I don't have it too often.

Whole foods that are higher in fat tend to make you feel satiated.

I usually eat about half - depends on how many calories I have available in my day. It really should be looked at in context with all the other foods you're eating that day to determine what is too much of anything.

I eat a whole avocado every day. I'm not a weigher, so log all of them as 250 calories. I lose weight just fine.

I love avacado's. I would eat one everyday if I could but they are too expensive. :(

Avocados... are awesome!!!! Sometimes I eat a while one smushed onto two pieces of low-cal toast for breakfast. As long as they fit in my calories and macros... yes!

I love avocados, but my grocery stores have had bad ones the last few months. I will usually mash some and put it on my sandwiches. I make an awesome guac, too! I could eat it all day every day. I like to bake an egg in them, too!

Thanks everyone. It looks like I can eat 1/2 to a whole every day and still lose some weight. I know it is healthy, so I guess I just have to consider it in the fat portion as serving my fat for the day more or less.

I found this past year that I could freeze avocados whole. Sometimes they are on sale during the summer for about 40 cents each, so I bag up a bunch and freeze them. The texture changes, but if you mash them and stir into salad dressings or use for guacamole the frozen ones are fine.

I often eat a whole avocado while I am pms-ing, sometimes I will bake egg into it and it will just be a meal! I say better to have a lot of your fat and calories coming from a fruit rather than a processed good- 1 avocado might be 300 calories, one muffin might be 300 calories, i'd vote avo every time.

Just eat what you know you'll burn. That's the 'secret!' I love avos for their unique nutrient profile. Avo oils keep my hair glossy, my skin moist & resilient. The only problem would be eating them... or anything else... to excess.
