Sorry, I'm pretty stupid but I wanted to know something. When you say "trans guy," were you a girl who turned into a guy or was it the other way around?

I never know that stuff either but never ask because I'm afraid it could be offensive. But I'm always curious because I'm not familiar with the terms and what means what.

I'm not trans, but my general impression from what LGBTQ people have told me is that it's okay to ask these things if you do so in a polite way. I think the term "turned into a guy" can be seen as offensive because it implies that the trans person's gender is not their "real" gender.

To answer the question (and I hope OP does not mind), a trans man is someone who identifies as male but was assigned female sex at birth. And trans woman would be the opposite - a female whose assigned sex was male at birth.

Also, it's pretty easy to answer these questions with Google, then you don't have to risk offending anyone.

I know I try and joke around a lot but when I want to know more about something, I just ask. People are usually pretty adept at differentiating between sincerity and whatever falsehood is masqueraded as something genuine within a loaded question. And if I do offend someone, I'll apologize for it. People can misconstrue pure curiosity with ignorance, and vice versa, but in the end, hashing out/clearing out any sort of misunderstanding(s) between parties involved is -- for the most part -- usually available as a recourse.

But yeah, I truly do apologize if I've offended the OP. Sorry about that.

I think we're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Also, this entire "risk of offending anyone" thing is pretty blown out as well. If this were a panel or a face-to-face conversation, the question really isn't as offensive as we're making it out to be.

We shouldn't have to live in a society where we're all feeling like egg shells are at the bottom of our feet.

Trans people are people who don't identify with the gender they were assigned at birth. So a trans man is s man who was assigned female at birth and vice versa. This thread was definitely not a joke and thank you for the support.

I had to explain about this to my son today since he became aware of a transgendered child in his school. Interesting convo for a walk home with a 7 year old
