Not sure what I am doing wrong!! Have lost 24 kg since July last year then plateau so decided to do MFP to keep track of food/exercise to lose the final 8kg.Have been doing this for 50 days wanting to lose a pound a week. Once a week I might go over my limit by 30 calories. I exercise 5 times a week for 50 mins plus weights, tried everything but the scale is not moving and meauresements are not either. Any advice???

Eating back those exercise calories? Make sure you are. ;)

Then again, it just gets plain hard to lose weight the closer you are to your goal. Have you tried zig-zagging calories? It's great for breaking through plateau and getting those last few pounds off.

to really help you we need to see your diary. You may want to consider opening it up for view.

The last 10-15lbs are the hardest ones to get off.

If I were you, I would start switching things up. Keep your body guessing. Make sure you're drinking enough water.

I found that upp'ing my calories and switching up my gym routine helped me drop 5lbs in a week. I'm now stuck again and trying to figure out what my body wants now. Our bodies like to fight us with those last few pounds.
  • Yeah I am eating them not always though, however I am woindering if I didn't eat them would the weight come off? Maybe I should try it

i plateau all the time so I have learned to zig zag my cals (go over for one or two days and be right on for the rest of the week) also u have to change ur workout routine and trick ur body! If it gets too used to one workout, ur not gonna burn anything else! Kinda like if u drink coffee every morning, but the caffeine does nothing for you anymore, take a break from the coffee for a couple of days. Ur system becomes immune to the caffeine, just like ur body has become immune to ur workout routine! Alll u have to do is trick ur body into thinking u quit, then start back up again and it will shock it!!!!

I agree with the zig-zagging and eating back your exercise calories. When I first started here I exercised at least 2 times a day, hoping to loose some weight fast lol didn't lose any weight no inches nothing! Once I slowed down my exercising I lost weight and inches... but I really don't think I was eating back my exercise calories... it was really hard to make up over 1,000 calories on top of what my daily goal was.

And it is really hard to lose weight once you get close to your goal...

also I've heard... haven't tried, but take 1 day and drink lots of water and 6 apples, nothing else that day... should get you over this plateau! Sometimes I go over my calories by a few hundred and that helps as well... kinda like the zig-zagging :)

With only 8kg to lose, I wouldn't even bother with the cardio and just lift heavy weights. The heavy weights will give you muscle definition and help burn or displace the last of the stubborn fat. Truthfully you may stay the same weight or even gain, but you will have a lot more definition and be a lot healthier.

I found this same wall 6 years ago. I lost 2 lbs a week for 7 months and then stopped dead. I couldn't lose "the last 10 lbs", even though I was exercising just as hard (high intense cardio). I am now strength training to finish losing the rest of the fat (for the past 3 months after long hiatus in-between) and have already started to see results.
  • Be true to you. First, you could actually b over doing it. To see change your body needs rest. Don't attack your body the very thing you want to change. Be easy keep working out , try something different and whatever you do keep on keeping on. It works.

Tell me more about this zig-zagging thing...how many calories over do you go? Do you have to go under 1200 calories then too? How much? I'm curious about that because I keep hearing people talk about it but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.
  • great advice thanks I might switch up the exercise and start running/walking mixed in with the exercycle. and more weights,I also walk the dog. I have hit plateaus before but this one has gone on for months, those damn last kgs!! Quite hard to do this when I have two kids and a job lol
  • Bump! I want to see the answers people have because I'm sure I'll have this issue soon since I don't have much go lose.

I suggest searching through the message board archives. Thats where I'm learning a lot. And don't be afraid to experiment because it can't really hurt you since you've plateaued. Good luck!!
  • I love you guys out there, so sweet and helpful and understanding. I also might be stressed cos I live in Christchurch in NZ and as some of you know we are going through earthquakes so bad at the moment so maybe I need to relax a bit and the weight might come off too :)
  • Are you eating to many carbs?? Carbs have alot of sugar...
  • wow you look amazing!!!

I'm with the zig zag on the calories idea, and watching your sodium (I haven't seen your diary, so I don't know what yours is at), and drinking as much water as you can. I hit a plateau for the last week and a half, and I decided to stay at 1400 cals a day, and letting my exercise be my deficit. I tried this earlier last week and lost a pound, so I'm gonna keep it up to see what happens. I think keeping your body guessing is something to try.
  • Possibly I have thought of having no carbs at night

Basically you take your weekly calorie goal and spread it out differently each day. For an average out about 1430 calories a day, I do 1250, 1450, 1250, 1600, 1250, 1800, 1500.

Here's a good calculator, but I don't personally use it because I think the day-to-day changes aren't big enough. In my opinion, bigger, more dramatic changes work the best at shocking your body out of a plateau.
