Is it crazy to start this journey of mine right before the holidays where I will be having a lot of family visits for the next 3 weeks?

I don't think it is crazy if you have truly resolved that you are going to do it right now. Otherwise I think you could be setting yourself up for failure, which could detract you from going forward.

I started my journey in late Sept to somewhat close tot he holidays. I got a good month under my belt which helped when the holidays did come around. I was losing, which made me motivated to watch what I ate even more during the holidays.

No time like the present. Set 2 or 3 small goals and just focus on those through the holidays. That way you'll have some confidence and momentum to keep going and it won't be the all-too-common New Year's resolution to "lose weight". You'll have already started.

As paraphrase what they say of New York, if you can make it work now, you can make it anytime.

Not at all. Use it as an opportunity to log EVERYTHING and see how much all those "bite here, bite there" family visit treats add up!

Also to motivate yourself to find ways of family socializing that are focused around movement, instead of eating/drinking/watching tv.

Not at all, what is crazy is always finding an excuse not to start. So if you start now and you're not perfect you're still further along than if you never started at all.

I started my journey in November just before Thanksgiving and I'm still going strong. I haven't looked back either because I know I can and will do it.

Not all of my family supports me on my journey and I have to deal with and accept that. I know now, in my head that it is up to me to go on this journey, and I am! I have been known in the past to eat out a lot...but the last 2 weeks has shown me that I can cook and eat at home.

I have eaten out about the same amount of time as eating at home (before my journey started I ate out almost every night, so that's progress) but as I go further on my journey I will eat out less and less. I just know that this time I am ready to go on this journey. Something about it this time is different for me. I haven't let anyone or anything get in my way. I just do my thing and I don't worry about what others are doing or thinking. If I worry about what they do I will flounder and quit. I have to make this about me. (that's the difference this time, it's about me).

I usually put everyone else's needs above my own but I can't do that anymore, not if I want to succeed. My thoughts on starting right before the holidays is, WHY NOT! It will make you think even more about what you're putting in your body. That's what I did and I still enjoyed the holiday with my family.

My issue is New Years, we are having a party this year. That's going to be very difficult but I can do it. I just have to plan my food and drink for it and not overdo it.

Nope, not crazy. I have lost weight during the last two holiday seasons, and plan to do it again this year. Even if you don't lose, you can begin being mindful and hopefully not gain. So either way, it's a win!

It really depends on your mindset.

If you know that you are ready and willing to make the changes necessary for whatever health and fitness goals you have, then the time is right for you....

Others have made really cool points about logging during this time so you can at least become familiar with the system, how much you are eating etc etc. If you are going to be insanely busy and distracted it might prove that much more difficult and could be de-motivating for someone just starting out though, I guess that is something to be aware of and be prepared for.

Only you know you. The circumstances around you become pretty much just background noise when you make this sort of decision. You do it for yourself and no-one can get in your way, at least that was how I felt.....even though others were not supportive and the road ahead was SO long (lost 168 lbs) I wasn't going to be put off by the time of year or others opinions.

Whenever you get started I wish you all the best and Welcome to MFP.
