i make pizza at home usually. if I use lowfat cheese is it really that bad?
the crust only consists of water, flour, yeast, and 1TB olive oil. I use fresh veggies and a little cheese.
is it at least better than going out for pizza?

I'm having homemade pizza tonight (we do almost evey Friday, It's DH's favorite day of the week)
Like you I make my own crust and I do thick for DH and a very thin crust for me. I make my own sauce to. Less extra things like preservatives.... I also precook hot Italian sausage & drain the fat off. I don't even bother with low fat cheese. Full fat for me has more flavor then I use less. And yes lots of vegies.
You're probably wondering if I will ever answer your question! It is that bad? I don't think so as long as you eat it in moderation. Seriously I use to eat close to 3/4 of the thin crust one. Now depending on my calories for the day I limit myselt to 2 or 3 slices. Have a salad on the side. Today is going to be a 2 slice day.
Oh and on the crust. I use part white whole wheat flour. It's just as healthy as regular whole wheat but not as heavy. My recipe uses 3 1/2 -4 C flour. Out of that I use 1 c. of the wheat.
Again, I am not big on denial but on moderation and portion control.0 -
yes, homemeade pizza is better for you. white whole wheat is NOT!! I work in health and nutrition industry. if it says white, do not eat it!0

I saute a bunch of veggies in olive oil & seasonigs for my pizzas, like spinach, mushrooms, onions, eggplant etc..., basically whatever is in the fridge and I use veggie sausage or veggie burger in place of meat unless i have leftover grilled chicken. I also do whole grain flatbread or whole grain pita's for the crust since I can't find any pre-made whole wheat and the idea of making my own stresses me out. I also agree with "hadoo" white is what makes it bad, go for brown whole wheat. This summer we did pizza alot on the grill too, just another idea. My picky meat & potatoes husband loves my healthier pizza's.0

This is from the King Arthur Flour site.
White Whole Wheat Flour
Milled from white whole wheat, rather than red, unbleached King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour has all the fiber and nutrition of traditional whole wheat, with milder flavor and lighter color. Thus, white whole wheat is a great way to add whole grains to your family's diet. Start by replacing 1/3 of the all-purpose flour in your favorite recipe with white whole wheat flour; gradually increase the percentage of whole wheat until your baked good's flavor and texture are just the way you like them. We find that in cookies, muffins, pancakes and quick breads, using white whole wheat flour in place of the entire amount of all-purpose flour yields a baked treat that's just as tasty as the original, with the benefit of increased fiber, vitamins and minerals.0 -
