My biceps quickly became too large (female)

Hello! I'll start by saying I'm new to this site, and simply made an account to post this, since I didn't see it here before.

I recently have been doing very intensive yoga which goes for 120 min. I've only done it 4 or 5 times, and I've noticed a huge impact on the size of my biceps. I'm naturally a small build and have lean muscle from dancing, with not a lot of body fat (the other females were worried about fat on their biceps), so these biceps aren't a good look for me.

I really enjoy yoga, and especially how this intensive yoga makes me feel, how should I go about losing these biceps? Also is it possible to continue this yoga and lose these biceps at the same time?

  • I will post a photo as soon as I figure out how...haha

More than likely you've never done upper body resistance work and the your biceps are just "bigger" from glycogen and water influx. It's normal. You just can't "lose" muscle. Spot reduction with exercise doesn't happen. It happens over time and usually from lack of use, meaning that you'd have to NOT use your arms at all for anything for that to happen. You're more than likely just over reacting to the look because based on your profile, your arms look pretty thin to me. Post a pic with your biceps now and get a consensus.

More important than the photo is measurements from before and after. I've been lifting weights since October, and while my arms feel different, there has been no change in size whatsoever. (Of course, I do have a lot more body fat than you do.)

Do you arms look different to you immediately after the yoga vs many hours after?

*every guy in the world reads this, wishing they could get huge biceps from 4 yoga sessions*

I suspect that what ninerbuff said is exactly the case. If you're really worried about it, I'd recommend taking measurements and monitoring them over time. It's very likely that you'll find if anything, the measurements are going down, not up.

@Intergalacticprincess - can you post a picture with your arm straight?
  • I never measured before because I wasn't planning on gaining muscle, but honestly I had 0 biceps and now they are there and pretty strong. Almost everyone has commented on them, that's how big of a difference it is, and how quickly it happened.

Even in a flexed position, your biceps look normal to me for a female of your stature.

Surely with those big biceps you can take me down in arm wrestling.

    This

And if yoga turned average women into body builders then I would be the first one in line for the class....but it doesn't. Op your arms look thin and you may be over reacting. They don't look big or very muscular to me..

No offense, but I think your biceps are on the small side. Could it be that you've lost fat, so that you can see the actual muscle now?

I agree with ninerbuff that it's just water/glycogen. I'm not seeing anything that looks bad but if you hate them, stop with the yoga.

^This. They just look like they got more defined with weight loss. They aren't very big at all.

I agree with this because it's about your own perception but it is most probably that you are more aware and a little water

But have to add there is no way in hell that 8 - 10 hours of yoga is going to give you appreciable muscle mass gain...because it takes a helluva lot more work and focus than that

If that is what you view as large biceps, yoga or almost any bicep using activity isn't for you.

So, basically, may as well not have any arms?

Well it wouldn't be my physique goals nor what I find attractive, but it's the OP's body, so she can have the goals for it she wants.

Being a dancer you probably already had well defined muscles, now with this new activity plumping them up with glycogen, the sudden change probably feels shocking. Give it some time and you will get used to them and may even grow to love them. Sudden change is always shocking at first.

Yep ! Surely is a miracle. I have to lift heavy, using a progressive strength training program and eat at a surplus
And others get " bulky " going to yoga ! Lmao !
