Going over sugar daily?

My current sugar "goal" is 24. I exceed this amount by 20-30 on a daily basis. This is because I eat fruit for breakfast and lunch (I love bananas, and MFP is telling me the banana I ate for lunch was 17 sugar), and usually a salad with dinner. I love Yoplait yogurt, and most of their yogurt alone has 14 sugar, and I also love Special K with Red Berries, which has 9 sugar.

My weight last week only dropped 0.8 lbs, which I was really unhappy and confused about (since I worked out a lot more than usual last week). Could the limited weight loss be caused by the sugar I'm going over? I know my sugar number decreases with exercise, but I have found that even after my usual hour of exercise daily (a lot of the time it's more), my sugar is still over!

Help?

I will be watching for the responses on this one, as I too have the same issue with sugar. I really try to stay as low as possible, however consistently go over. I have switched to a low sugar yogurt, however once I add in fruit and maybe some almond butter with breakfast, I can not stay under!
  • I'm having the same problem with protein as well as sugar because like you I eat a lot of fruit. Ill be watching this thread

I am consistently over my sugar too. Bananas are the biggest culprit; I eat one almost every day. Frankly, I don't care about it. I don't do a lot of processed sugar; most of my intake comes from fructose or lactose (fruit and dairy) and I actively avoid high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners like Splenda/Equal/Sweet 'n' Low/etc. I don't even put any type of sweetener in my coffee anymore. That said, I am also consistently way under carbohydrates in general.

I'm not an expert but since you've increased your workouts you have lower weight loss totals could be due to muscle gain. You may have lost inches instead of actual weight. Also if you aren't eating enough calories your body will preserve whatever you have to sustain itself. So that's why they say eat back your earned cals through workouts.

As far as the sugars go...I don't think that fruit calories are harmful. They are natural. I think that it is the refined sugars that would be the worry.

Yes, I do think that going over in sugar can participate in a weightloss plateau! I am living proof of that. I never counted sugar grams until I was on my 2nd month of no weight loss. When I looked back, I was over in sugar every single day for as long as I could see. I didn't realize how many foods had sugar grams that I was not accounting for. (such as breads, granola, etc) I now track it every day and in a few weeks of doing that, I have broken my plateau and lost about 4 lbs. I really think that you have to watch it all. Sodium, fat, sugar, carbs, protein...... I am not a nutritionist, so I can not explain the whys, but it certainly impacted my ability to lose weight.

Ditto....with the sugar by the time I have breakfast I have used my sugar for the day and breakfast usually consist of Yoplait yogurt and Granola bar. I don't get it......then I eat lots of fruit throughout the day as well.

I used to be continuosly going over on sugar- in fact I probably still am- I just stopped counting it. To my understanding MFP counts all sugars as the same kinds. I know there are a variety of different types of sugar out there (like processed and enriched, etc) but they all fall under the same category in the diary.
I kept seeing those red numbers and getting down on myself. I LOVE fruit and it is the perfect substitute for a fattening pudding or other higher calorie sweet. I figured that as long as a majority of my sugar intake was coming from fruits, I wasn't going to worry about it any more. There is no way to eat the reccommended serving of fruits and veggies without going over on sugar. I wouldnt sweat it.
And as far as your .8 weight loss? It could be a variety of things affecting a weigh in-- and you should never be dissappointed with a loss at all! all losses are FABULOUS!

Don't worry about natural sugars. I also eat a lot of fruit (it's the best way to get your vitamins!), but it's impossible to stay under for total sugars.

I always go over on sugars, but I eat a lot of fruit. I pretty much don't even pay attention to sugars anymore. I even take my sugar levels several times a day during my cleanse days (smoothies-only days), and it never spikes. Fruit sugar is NOT like other sugars. :)

It's not impossible to control sugar, but it IS hard. Fruit is "nature's candy" so it's got quite a bit of sugar, but it's natural. However, it's still sugar. Granted, not the same as refined, but it's still sugar going into your body. I've recently started tracking my sugar and have managed to stay at my limit for a few days in a row. It takes some thinking. I really have to play around with the foods I'm thinking of eating to see what I can eat, how much I can have, etc. You could try eating half of things (half an apple, half a banana, etc) to cut down on the fruit sugars and leave some extra for veggie sugars? More veggies, a little less fruit? Just my suggestions. But, if you're going to be over your sugar, better to be over with fruit than with a pack of Oreos. :) Keep up the good work, don't get discouraged.

I don't believe that for one second...

On my cleanse days (I'll do all fruit, carrots, and spinach with a couple servings of raw nuts for 2-4 days at a time), I lose the most weight. I do that if I'm at a standstill with weightloss, and it always helps. I'll lose 2-6 pounds during those days, with NEVER having my sugars go above normal levels-doing 1 hour and 2 hour postprandial sugar tests.

I am all for whole grains and stuff also, but in no way, shape, or form is fruit bad.

I'm always over on sugar but I think it's because of the natural sugars in fruit but I choose to believe that they really count as bad as refined sugars i.e. chocolate
