Diabetic protein shake ideas

My mom wanted me to research some protein shakes/smoothie recipes for my grandpa, he's diabetic, but it's pretty well managed. He's 85 and needs to gain weight, we've met with a nutritionist before but the message seems to work better coming from us. I've never made a smoothie before so I'm kinda at a loss on where to start. I know that I can't add tons of fruit into, I want to limit it to one serving per shake. I also know that the main ingredients should be something like greek yogurt, peanut butter, avacado, and whey protein powder, but I'm not sure what else to put in the shakes. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, oatmeal isn't a great idea for a diabetic.

I have a cousin that is diabetic. She drinks 1 glass of milk a day. Doctor told her to. I did not know milk was actually good.
If you use peanut butter do not buy the garbage that has trans fats in it or added sugars or palm oil. Smuckers is good.
Maybe the oatmeal that you get in packets with 200 grams of sugar? I eat plain oatmeal.

Which type of diabetes does he have? Is he controlled by medication? Injections? Diet?

There are nutritional shakes diet-supplements developed for people with diabetes ( Boost glucose control, for example). From a physiology perspective elderly are not adults - they have different needs and restrictions (including protein, they need less protein than an adult). On top of that they often take medications, some of which interact with diet. If your grandfather has been losing weight it's very, very important that he consult a doctor. Otherwise, why don't you ask the nutritionist that you already met for specific recommendations?

This would be good for him:

5 medium strawberries (or frozen with no sugar added)
1 cup unsweetened soy milk (or unsweetened almond milk)
1/2 cup low fat Greek-style yogurt
    6 ice cubes

My husband is diabetic so I have a few. It just depends if he's picky. Just throw those in the blender and instant smoothie. You really don't need the protein powder unless his doctor advised it. There are a couple on Amazon that have zero sugar.

I don't know too much ab out diabetes but this is what I like

If you like gingerbread, Oxygen magazine has a recipe for a delicious Gingerbread cookie shake: 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup vanilla enriched Rice Dream, 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 T molasses, and ice cubes. Blend and drink ! Mmmmmm

I also like a Creamsicle, which is a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat vanilla yogurt. Blend and drink.

The Protein Packed Pina Colada smoothie is blended with the following ingredients: Cup cottage cheese, cup canned pineapple or cup pineapple juice, half a frozen banana, half a cup of milk, 1 T coconut, half a scoop vanilla protein powder, and a cup of ice cubes.

The Key Lime Protein Shake is blended with half an avocado, juice of a lime, 2 tsp lime zest, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 T coconut, a cup of milk, and 1-2 packets of Stevia (optional).

The Chocolate Maple Shake is made by blending a cup of milk, 3 T protein powder, 1 T cocoa powder, and 1 tsp maple syrup

Last but not least, for a change, I blend a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of chocolate protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat coffee yogurt. Also good!

    The Hulk
2 scoops vanilla, ½ tbsp sugar-free pistachio pudding mix, 1 mint leaf or a few drops peppermint extract (optional), 1 few drops green food coloring (optional), 8 oz cold water or low-fat milk , 3-5 ice cubes, Add all ingredients to blender, blend, and pour into cup. This tastes great without the mint so don't worry if you don't have it around. The shake is a light green even without the food coloring but if you want it green (like The Hulk!), you'll need a few drops.

A lot of the recipes suggested are weight loss and if you read the original post again he needs to GAIN weight it says so my suggestion is to use glucerna shake mix packets and add things like homemade non sugar peanut butter or I like cashew butter (break out the food processor and make it yourself with a bit of oil so there's no added sugars - or go sugar free organic.. lots of recipes on Pinterest to make nut butter) stevia can be added to sweeten. They make glucerna in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors but I add things to mine. I was gestational diabetic twice and after i had kids it didnt go away for 2 years, so on the verge of diabetic for 6 years now, and lost weight (yay!) am now considered pre-diabetic range. I like glucerna because you want a "slow burn" with no huge sugar spikes... with flavor! it was my friend when i had to eat. To gain weight I would maybe look into adding things like full fat cream cheese (cheesecake....mmmm)

Side note * my nutritionist always told me to EAT my calories and not drink them... so you may want to talk to a nutritionist too.... diabetes is nothing to mess around with & a nutritionist is usually covered under medical insurance for diabetics. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to second this! Most of the suggestions given are low-cal, and the point is to put weight on him.

I don't know enough about diabetes to have a great answer, but in addition to commercially available shakes for diabetics or older adults, the basic recipe for any smoothie is pretty simple... you just need to start with a liquid and add some food that would taste good in it :). And something frozen will help it be frosty, thicker, and cold! So like a cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, and half a cup of frozen blueberries. Items like milk, yogurt, nut butter, and protein powder will add some protein and calories. And pretty much any fruit or veggie can go in a smoothie (assuming you have a high-powered blender) to some extent. Fruits will add more calories, but as you said, you have to watch the sugar. If you want to use yogurt as a base, you will need to add some other liquid or it will be super duper thick.

I'd say you're on the right track with nut butters, protein pow, ice cubes, yogurt. Some Greek yogurts can pack 200+ calories a cup! Cinnamon (can help regulate insulin!) and cocoa powder for low-carb flavorings, and even though it looks weird, spinach and greens can add in nutrients and thicken it up a bit. Coconut and flax oils (or flax seed, which will also thicken the mix, but does contain 'slow' carbs in the hull) will also add calories. Try full-fat coconut, cashew, hemp, and almond "milks" for a lower-carb alternative to dairy or juice but more calories and flavour than water.
If he needs to gain and has trouble eating enough, I'd look into bars and start stirring healthy fats and pea protein powder into everything, maybe try to up intake of calorie-dense things like grass-fed meats. Liquids tend to fill you up pretty well, so that wouldn't be my first go-to if he's troubled by feeling too full.

My husband is diabetic so I have a few. It just depends if he's picky. Just throw those in the blender and instant smoothie. You really don't need the protein powder unless his doctor advised it. There are a couple on Amazon that have zero sugar.

The carb count is good, but I couldn't have much more food in the same sitting that had carbs in it. So - fantastic if it is the sole food for the meal; not so fantastic if the rest of the meal includes carbs. Personally - I'd substitute full fat yogurt, and potentially add more fat (especially since he is underweight). But also check his lean body mass and make sure he's eating enough protein to sustain it, then fill out the day with healthy fats (avoid chemically extracted vegetable fats, transfats, dairy/meat are ok - but better if they are from grass-fed critters).

(I'm controlling my blood sugar by eating low carbs (max 20 net grams in a 3 hour period, typically around 30-40 net per day.)
