Weight lifting question

What is the difference between "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)" and "Circuit Training - general"? There seems to be a HUGE gap in calories burned, so I'm just curious if there's a big difference in the activities themselves.

Any insight appreciated. :)

Strength training is usually associated with low reps, heavy weights, and ample rest between sets. It's not as 'cardio' as circuit training (lower weights, higher reps, less rest).

yea i tend to burn more with circuit because its fast paced moving from one exercise to another or station to station sometimes keeping the heart rate up as opposed to doing reps with weights.

I sort of think of it as weightlifting, where you do bench press, squats, shoulder presses etc on the resistance machines, with the set reps and rest periods. With the circuit training, I see it as push ups, burpees, running, situps, step ups etc... more of a cardio work out.

Thanks! That's good news for me. I've been logging the wrong thing entirely.

That reply was to the first guy. Body Pump is more like circuit training because the longest rest you ever see is 20 seconds. And there are several routines where the teacher tells you to "keep your heart rate up".

yes, circuit training has cardio intervals interspersed between the strength intervals...think Jillian's 30DS for example...
like 1 minute squat press, 1 minute run in place, one minute pushups, 1 minute jumping jacks, 1 minute bicycle crunches, repeat whole thing, then pick a few new ones and do a circuit of those, etc.

strength training is counting reps and sets of heavy weights and taking your time and concentrating on form, burns way less calories in the MOMENT but leads to a higher metabolism OVERALL and is VERY important to reaching your goals, provided your goals involve being strong and healthy and not just "skinny at any cost" :grumble:
