P90x, Breastfeeding, and HELP :P

Okay I have been a member here for forever but never really stuck with it. THIS time, I am determined.
I just had my 3rd child 3 weeks ago and my husband went back to Afghanistan with me weighing 195lbs. He will be back in October so I am hoping to lose at least 30 lbs before he comes back.
I am starting P90x July 1st so was hoping to get as much helpful information I could about it from other users. I am also nursing which causes me to burn an extra 200-300 calories a day, so do I need to eat the deficit of that, as well as what I burn with P90x, and how do I know exactly how much I am burning with P90x?
Any other helpful tips with P90x will be greatly appreciated.

Get a heart rate monitor. It will keep track of the calories that you are burning while doing P90X.
From what I've read on the web it seems to be around 400-500 calories an hour depending on which exercise routine you are doing.0 -
As far as breastfeeding goes, just gage your hunger. Your body will tell you if it is in need. If your baby is getting hungry more then every 2 hours, that could also be a sign that you need to eat more. Just try to make smart choices when eating that 'extra' bit of food.0

Your baby is three weeks old and you're breastfeeding?! Then do not think about losing weight on purpose!
You will get rid a lot of "crap" when you lose weight -- and a lot of it goes out with the milk. You wouldn't want your baby to drink that! Some women lose weight automatically, some are HUNGRY (like I was) and put on like two sizes (as I did, long gone now).
If you want to be beautiful for your husband -- be a great mom and respect that you have to be there for your little one now!
Focus on your child for the next months.
Your time comes right after that.
(I have breastfed my three boys during their first 6 months, so I sort of know what I'm talking about! )
Congratulations and good luck!!!0 -
Are you going to still be nursing after you start P90x?
I only ask because I still remember the advice I was given when I had my daughter 6 years ago, about lactic acid build-up in the milk - http://babyfit.sparkpeople.com/articles.asp?id=17
I don't know how intense a workout P90x will be for you... ?0 -
Log your breastfeeding as a food entry (Search for 'breastfeeding mom' in the database) It will give you an extra 500 cals a day (plus extra fat, carbs & protein allowance) and while your baby is feeding full time you need them! Seems like a lot but trust me I've lost plenty while still allowing for BF'ing! Don't forget to drink looooads of water
I now enter a '0.6' portion of BF'ing to my diary to allow 300 cals as my son now only feeds a couple of times a day now. And I'm still losing!
Hope that helps and well done on BF'ing.0 -
I agree with eating to hunger. I've volunteered with peer breastfeeding organizations and as long as you are not overdoing it (hours of exercise a day, starvation diet), staying hydrated (this is key) and feeding your baby on cue (not being overly invested in scheduling during the early weeks, paying attention to early signs of hunger, etc.) then you should be fine. I think people get caught up in breastfeeding being *at odds* with healthy living and it just doesn't need to be that way. Eating whole foods and moving your body (an at home workout is a great idea for new moms) can support a mama-baby nursing relationship, for sure.
I just reread your post, RME. October is not that far off and though I have no doubt that you will look and feel amazing after 3 months of P90x (and post-partum weight loss can come off fairly quickly in many cases so it is certainly a possibility that 30 lbs. will be lost in that time). I do hope that your focus remains on having your husband see a glowingly fit and happy wife and mother of his child rather than a number on a scale. :flowerforyou:0 -
I started P90X on June 1 and really like it so far. My one bellyache about it is the time commitment (an hour plus everyday is a lot, IMHO). I wear my HRM for each workout, but on the strength training days your calorie burn is going to be, well, disappointing. The reason for this is that you don't typically get your heart rate up very high when lifting weights, but you will definitely know the next day that you worked your muscles. Not only do these muscles redefine your body, but they burn more calories then fat (and they look a whole lot sexier). The HRM will be a much more accurate description of your calories burned on the cardio days.
If you'd like to add me, feel free. We'll do it together!0 -
I did p90x for a few months while home with my little one. I loved it, but then she woke up! It was great in the winter when we were him and she slept most of the day. She is now 5 months old and the time commitment is a lot. I couldn't get through the whole workout before she woke up or needed to be fed or something else. Just two weeks ago I headed back to the gym, which has childcare, so I could get a full workout in. I plan to use the p90x videos for days we just can't get to the gym. Good luck with it!0

I heard P90x is pretty intense, hence why I have held off on doing it while bf'ing, but that is just me. I would wait until your milk supply evens outs which happens around the baby's 3rd month. I always ate based off of hunger too when I breastfed and made sure my snacks were almost like a mini meal.0

I breastfed my last child for 13mo, as soon as I quit I got pregnant with this child and plan on breastfeeding her just as long, I just so happen to be one of the unlucky ones that STAY hungry the whole time I am nursing. I know that if you lose weight too rapidly it can go to your Breastmilk, which depending on what Dr. you talk to they will say other wise, and that the 'junk' in your body will just make the Breastmilk taste funny and the baby may try and wean themselves. Idk, I'm gonna do some more reading up on it and talk to my Lactation consultant and see what they say.0 -

Thanks! Which routine are you doing? I plan on doing the 'lean' though I'm not 100% sure on the difference between the two yet. and I don't mind doing and hour+ just because I used to go to the gym for 2, and I have people here at the house to help with the kiddos.0 -

Thanks I'll need it. lol. Time committment isn't really an issue because LO sleeps hard for 3 hours at a time so I could get it done then, and I also have people to help me with the kids while I do it. I'm just so excited to get started! I have had this since September and couldn't start because the week I got them I found out I was pregnant. lol0 -
That is great you have people to watch the baby. Besides that problem I loved it! I did the classic program. I didn't follow the diet. Too restrictive while nursing. Plyo and tempo were my favorites!!!0
