tuesday tips- I've heard (and tried) toothpicks. - NO CALORIES & you can play with them in your fingers & chew on them. I always stole a bunch of the mint flavored ones from the local perkins when I'd eat there.
Today I've only had 2 cigs!

Tuesday tips - I've found that suckers work really great when you crave. I've heard other people who cut a straw to about cigarette length and hold it and suck on it.
I had my 'morning smoke on the way to work while the patch kicks in' today... and right before I got out of my car I dropped my smoke right on my hands and burnt the crap out of 2 of my fingers from the cherry. I decided that I deserved that for having a smoke, and now when I crave I feel the pain in my fingers. Its working so far! I have 2 left for the rest of the day. I'm also trying to get back on track with my eating & weight loss (I gained 4.5 lbs) and continue to wean myself off the smokes.
This made me laugh. Nothing like a little classic conditioning using pain as the trigger! I like the straw idea. i might have to try that one too.0 -

Way to go! :drinker: :flowerforyou: Only 2 smokes today is awesome! Great job!
I had a lot more than planned :grumble: I ended up arguing with the cashier @ walmart over ad-matching (I lost, because I got so frustrated and said eff it).. and then she refused one of my coupons. I was so angry I ended up puffing away. Then I did Zumba and I feel much better now :laugh:0 -
I did the cut straw..and when I puffed it I tapped my finger on the end of the straw to block the hole so it was opened and then closed as I inhaled through the other end..this made it slightly harder to suck the air through which made my lungs work more on the inhale and it mimicked the full lung feeling of a cigarette puff. I really craved that feeling...soon I was able to just do deep inhales without the straw and get the same relaxing feeling without the cigarette or the straw...I then added some fresh smells, a lotion, a candle, even the smell of fresh air to enjoy and relax me. I grew to appreciate the fresh air being inhaled into my lungs and realized how much more relaxing that was than the smelly cigarette smell.
I have to say within a week of not smoking I felt so renewed and fresh...not just without the smoke smell or the heavy breathing but also the feeling of my own body without nicotine...I used to think I couldn't live without the cigarette and now I don't know why I lived with them for so long..it's like coming out of a trance.....0 -

Oh alright fine! I'll gripe.  I have noticed that I have been having alot of anger issues lately. Things that I am normally calm about make me want to rip my hair out. My mom has been driving me nuts. Normally, she can be demanding (she's legally blind and I take her on her errands) but I am okay with it because I love her and want to help her cope with her recent blindness. However, I was over at her house helping her on Monday and I just about bit her head off. I couldn't figure out why i was so angry until I realized I hadn't had a cigarette in over twelve hours. Is this normal or am I just a b****? I'm worried about becoming a meanie.
@shellshell: thanks for sharing that about the breathing. It relaxed me a bit. How long after you quit did it take before you felt like it was easier to breathe?0 -
It took two weeks for my lungs to feel really great..no more shortness of breath and no more deep inhale cravings. When it’s hot and humid outside I used to really suffer from shortness of breath which made me inactive on hot days , now it doesn’t even bother me.
You will feel angry...I am the happiest most patient person I know (my friends all call me Mary Poppins..lol) but that first week was awful with the mood swings..WOW...my husband came to bed one night and said "Since you stopped smoking, I don't think you even like me anymore." I have been with my husband for 29 years(since I was 14 years old) and I told him "Well since I quit smoking I have nothing left in my life to look forward to and I DON"T think I like you very much but just give it a few days and I'm sure we'll both get used to it!" I then pulled up the covers, rolled over and seethed until I fell to sleep. That weekend he went to our cottage. He said to put in the dock but I know it was to get away from me. The anger lasted only a week, by the second week I was emotionally adjusting and actually beginning to feel the freedom of not smoking.
If you all don't mind, I would like to start posting of the things I went through when I quit...step by step...I know it's only been a couple of months for me to be smoke free and I am no expert but I feel like one because I have NO cravings...NO side effects...NO set backs...I feel like a nonsmoker..it actually feels like I was never a smoker and I would like to share how I got to this point..if any of it helps anyone then I will consider myself blessed to have done so....My first post will begin with the first days of my quit....0 -

Now I don't feel like such a evil troll LOL! Thanks for sharing. I am excited to really completely quit and be able to breathe again. Please, please please do those posts. I am sure they will be helpful to all of us.0 -
I am having a hard time committing to a quit date. I really thought I was ready, then BAM got hit with stress and still at half pack per day. And I am back to the point of really not even wanting to quit. Blah. I need to do this!!!0

i chose my 100th day of MFP as my quit day....so yesterday was my 145th day on MFP and my 45th day of not smoking
i'm feelin pretty awesome right now good luck on quitting everybody!! keep it up!0 -

I didn't chose a date, every other time I did that I always postponed it...this time I ran out of cigarettes but I had such a busy night helping my son with homework I didn't make it to the store to buy them...I then ran late the next morning so again didn't stop to buy any...that night was a Friday so I decided (just because I seemed to be doing okay without them) to see if I could make it until Saturday morning...Saturday morning came and my husband an I did some plumbing and I was pretty busy and distracted so again decided to see how long I could go...I set a goal of Tuesday- that would make 5 days with no cigarette, and I did.
I always told myself that I could go buy them any time..that seemed to take the pressure off because it wasn't an official quit. But after I made it over 4 days I realized I no longer had any nicotine in my system and it then it was all about breaking habits from then on...so I decided I HAD quit. Try to stop smoking for a day...and then another...not just cutting back but a full day without one..0 -
well, the easiest thing so far has been NOT going out with my husband when he goes to smoke on the front porch. it's hot and humid outside, and he's very hot natured (besides being very overweight), so he doesn't hang out on the porch like he used to. which means he spends more time inside. which means i don't feel like i have to be outside with him in order to spend time with him. which means i am not tempted to smoke. which is good. cuz i'm going through one of those depressions again - but with the way i've been eating the last couple of weeks, you'd think i'd'a seen that coming.
the next few weeks will be critical.
MAJOR upside: my laptop's been fixed, so now i can take it into the 'big room' and do DVD workouts online again. which is good, cuz it's just too HOT outside to walk to the fitness room.
Monday fact check: did you know we had a HEAT advisory last week? i was tempted to take my frying pan outside instead of cooking on the stove - save electricity! but i'll tell you what - this awful heat and humidity may save my life in the long run if it helps me quit.0 -

Thursday motivation: the cravings pass.
today i sent my husband and son out of the house so i could get some deep-cleaning done. at one point (somewhere between scrubbing the kitchen floor and rearranging the dining area) i nearly called my husband to ask him to PLEASE bring me some menthols. i totally deserved them, too. i was kicking butt on dirt and grime in this house. no joke. but then i thought, maybe i'll just do this next chore and see how i feel. and you know what? by the time i'd finished 'this next chore', i was feeling much better.
so, i win. take THAT, tobacco!0 -
So I am out of cigarettes, I am at my parents house, I am broke and I have my e-cig. I think this is the perfect opportunity to try not smoking for the rest of the day today and tomorrow. I will see how it goes! I hope everyone is doing okay with the quitting. I know we are all having a tough time and I appreciate the encouragement we have been getting from our ex-smokers and each other. Let's keep it up. I will try to post on here more often. I have had a busy couple of days. How is everyone doing?0
