Too much Protein? When should I work out? Fruit?

Well, I finished today, for the first time since joining the site, UNDER my calorie limit...but over my protein goal. Why is this bad? I thought protein gave you energy?

Does it matter that I work out after a meal? Dinner is always my biggest meal so my Mom and I have been going out and walking afterward. I know that unused calories turn to fat. Small meals throughout the day I figure those calories are used up just by being awake, moving around, living...but is it better to work out after a big meal to try to use up those calories? Does it matter?

Also, I eat a lot of fruit but I never realized how many calories are in my fruit..should I be limiting that? I eat veggies, but I'd rather have a handful of blueberries...

I don't worry about going over protein and fiber, I don't even look at it as I'm always right at the number or just over. I wouldn't worry about it unless you are going way way over your daily limits.

It's ok if you go over on protein. It's just a general guideline. Some people require more protein than others, depending on their fitness routines and goals. You can change your ratios if you want. Just try to keep your calories as close to goal as you can. I frequently go over carbs and fiber, but it isn't a problem. It still works for me as long as the calories are right. :drinker:

I am am over in protein almost everyday. My Dr says high protein / low carb / high fiber = heart healthy!! Also I noticed on these days I am not high protein / low carb / high fiber I am tired and feel icky!!
  • If I'm feeling snackish, I'll get blueberries..I'll eat a banana, have a fruit salad...Bananas were a real surprise to me..105 calories in one banana

That amount of fruit you mentioned is ok, just factor it into your daily amount

Protein is really really important for your body. When you workout and feel sore the next day, it's because you've torn tiny muscle fibers. Protein helps rebuild these fibers and that's how you gain muscle. Proteins have so many different and important functions in your body. The good news is that excess protein isn't stored in the body...you'll excrete it if you've consumed too much.

You're ideally supposed to have three-five servings of fruit a day. Bananas and blueberries are great choices! Blueberries have a lot of antioxidants and bananas are a great source of potassium and Vitamin K. It's okay to go over the daily recommendation as long as you're not going overboard because it would be a lot of sugar (granted it's healthy sugar but too much of anything isn't good because you could be lacking in other areas such as complex carbohydrates, protein, etc.). Best of luck!
