A racing cyclist in waiting!

Hi All,
Well I'm Roger - 3 years ago I was 70Kg and a pretty decent amateur racing cyclist - but a bereavement knocked me for 6 and it's been far from a steady decline since - 30Kg put on and now I'm around the 100Kg mark - could be more since I'm afraid to get on the scales.
Nothing to do with the New Year but something has just clicked in me and I want to start racing again - so this is the start of my journey - goal is 1Kg a week - so, in theory, by the summer with the right diet and training I should be back to my racing snake best - but it's a lifestyle change that's in order as I can't go through yet another yo-yo - I don't think my body could take it!
Wish me luck - it's going to be a tough journey but worth it as when I'm racing my bike I feel so alive!

Good luck. I was off for 23 years after having one of the most expensive crash in the final 100km, took out almost everything in the front end, and got a ultimatum to finish my degree. I stopped cycling and didn't get back on until three years ago mainly for May is Bike Month. I took it more seriously in 2015 and logged 7k. I also gain and lost 50 pounds over the hiatus (but gain a few back over the holidays). Hopefully by summer I'll be back to my racing weight again (the last ten is allusive). No future racing plans as the masters around me are kicking my butt but it would be nice to get back the glory days not holding on for dear life on club rides.0

If you want to get back to it you can - I've had so many come backs it's unbelievable - but the main thing is just to enjoy it - and the rest will come - my friend, who is a coach, always says - consistency is the key - not necessarily quantity but definitely quality. I arguably had my best season at a maximum of 10 hours a week and an average of probably between 6 and 7 - but it was all focused stuff. His son rides for Team Sky so I reckon he knows what he's talking about0

I would like to welcome you, and introduce myself. I am a 57yo recreational cyclist, recently recovered from a cycling injury that took me off the bike for 6 months, and then had a difficult time getting back into riding again. Just prior to my accident, I was up to just over 1000kms a month, now at 500 to 600kms. I use both Strava and MapmyRide if you need any encouragement, look me up. My modest goal this year is to develop and maintain a more diversified fitness routine with a 500km/per mo. average cycling, 125km/mo. rowing, and strength training 5 times a week. Good luck and all the best in 2016!0

Hi I got into cycling as a newbee in May (also for cycle month) and I've seriously caught the bug. I'm currently at 96kg but looking to get down to 80-85 (I'm 5'11 and a big build so much less would look silly on me).
I was averaging just below 1k per month by the end of summer and looking to exceed that this year. I'm on strava if you want to look me up.0 -
Thanks guys and yeah as much encouragement as we can all get is always useful! Weight loss probably means more for us cyclists than any other sport, we all want to be great climbers - I did make it down to 70Kg back in 2009 (I'm 5' 8") and it was a dream - I started the year at 95Kg being the last up the climb - and finished the year being first up! What a buzz!
Profile is at https://www.strava.com/athletes/337718 - bike is in Cardiff, so picking it up this week and onwards and upwards to a cracking 2016!0
