I recently bar scanned a can of Farmers Market garden veg soup and the data says it is 55 kcals. The can itself says it is 55 kcals per half can. Which is correct?

Both, technically... it's probably 55 kcals per serving, and the can has two servings. The scanner is set to default to one serving size. So if you have the whole can it'd be 110 for 2 servings.

You should always go with the food packaging if in doubt.

Welcome to the wonderful world of nutritional labeling! It's actually gotten better in the last couple of years, as people realized that the labeling was misleading and confusing. Healthy Choice soups are like this, too. The microwavable soup bowls are pretty clearly packaged and marketed as an on the go, single serving meal. The packaging gives a nice claim of "110 calories per serving". When you read the nutritional label on the back, you find the soup bowl contains 2 servings. I don't get it either. I guess you're supposed to share with a friend?

Nutrition claims can be misleading. I have become the irritating person in the grocery store who reads the nutritional labels before buying stuff.

That's incredibly common. Most food packages contain more than one servings.

Haha, up until recently my hubby used to make fun of me for taking so long picking stuff, now that he's counting calories and macros he totally gets the pain!

It can really be an eye opener realizing how small a lot of portion sizes are on packaged foods. It also explains a lot why people's logging isn't accurate due to misunderstandings like that. I'ts always good to double check :)
  • I've got it! Heinz data not correct.
On the can it says it is 400g with 2 servings @ 55 cals each, but when you barcode scan it, after eating the whole can it says you have consumed just 55 cals!!
