Ship out to boot camp on September 6th 2016!!!! Had my first IST at PT on Thursday and it was rough. Was able to do 5/10 pull ups, 12/100 sit-ups, and got 14 minutes on my 1.5 mile run when I needed to get 12 min to pass :( Overall a big failure. But that's ok I have plenty of time to train

First of all, you're going to want to start running. Lots and lots of running. You will do lots of running your entire career no matter where you are (even on deployment). I highly suggest that you be able to pass the actual PFT before going to boot camp. Your recruiters only care about shipping you there, they don't care if you fail boot camp. Get up to running 3 miles and get under 28 minutes. You may want to add sprints and longer distance runs just to survive boot camp.

The sit ups is a lot more about technique than actual abdominal strength. Make sure your feet are close to your butt and your arms are low across your stomach. Arms shouldn't come very far off your stomach. Go fast. You should be able to do at least 50 before leaving for boot camp.

The actual PFT requires 3 pull ups to pass, but the closer to 20 you get before leaving for boot camp the easier you'll have it when you get to the fleet.
  • Running is definitely a priority for me right now. There is a school across the street from me that has a track so I will be running a mile everyday to start of and gradually increase. And for pull ups it was 3 to pass and 10 to max out, for sit ups it was 65 to pass and 100 to max out, and the 1.5 mile run was to be completed under 12 min. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will definitely be working on sit-ups daily because its what I'm weakest at and trying to get the technique down.

I'm going off the actual Marine Corps standards, not the ship to boot camp standards. You will get PT during boot camp, but the closer you are to passing the actual standards the better you'll fare during boot camp.
  • Ohh ok I see. Well thanks it helps a lot. I will give it 110%.

Agree with what usmcmp stated. Look at the actual active duty standards and shoot for them. Life will be a lot easier in boot camp if you do that. You've got plenty of time in hand, but better to start working hard now and be ready.

Totally agree with all that has been said. To add to it all make one of your training sessions the actual PFT... i have done this before and it works well prep for the PFT. As well as this mix up your training as stated in other posts. Remember for what your getting into its not all about physical.. its mental as well.. your going to be pushed to your limits and beyond so you must have that mindset as well. Hope this helps

Gonna join the navy in 2016 as well !! But the Irish one ;) I'm good at running and have no problems with sit-ups but push-ups are my worst enemies :/ About your running you shouldn't really care about the distance but more about the time at the beginning. Tell yourself you're gonna run 30 minutes without stopping. When you feel comfortable doing it start trying to improve your distance until you get up to 4 miles in 30 minutes. Then you will be able to pass the running part without any problem. I would recommend you to run 3 times a weeks. Twice 30 minutes and one day just focus on speed training to improve your speed :) Don't run everyday at the beginning because the only thing you'll do is injure yourself cause your body isn't used to the effort. Just run every second day and eat a healthy diet.
My last advice to you is : Walk. If the distance is shorter than 1,5 mile don't get the bus or take the car but walk there. It will help you more than you think.

PS : Add me as a friend if you want :)
