I've always struggled to stay motivated to lose weight (I have about 50lbs to lose!) so if anyone has any tips or just words of encouragement it would be appreciated!

Take advantage of all the great resources - especially success stories on MFP because almost everyone here has felt exactly as you're feeling right now. And don't beat yourself up or quit if you fail a few times. We all have. You're on your way - good luck!

In my experience (6 years of serious effort, many more half assed), it helps to have some serious goals. Not just wanting to lose for an event and definitely not trying to lose to please someone else. Do this for your health, and not immediate but long term, longevity. Do it to feel better, not just physically but mentally too. In the end, only you can decide which WHY is most important.

First- Good on you for coming here and doing this! :) You rock just for trying!
My best advice is go in baby steps! Once you make one baby step, you'll want to make a bigger step.

Don't race to the gym and work out for two hours, because the next day you'll feel too sore, tired and discouraged to want to do it again. A half hour work-out the first week or so is great! Then add more exercise from there. Start with a ten minute walk, then the next week make it 20. Step up in increments.

Don't immediately cut your body down to 1200 calories a day if it's used to 2400- cut back to 1800 or 1600 for a week or two, then cut back further after that. If you feel deprived and hungry all the time because you suddenly cut your body off from what you're used to, you'll want to splurge and binge eat. :)

Rennebycakes also has a good point with goals. Make a reasonable fair goal and write it down. Don't make impossible goals. Keep them short and achievable so you don't get discouraged.
My last piece of advice? Take your waist and hip measurements instead of relying on weight scales. Scales see 'everything', water gain, bm's, hormone changes, muscle gain, etc. The measuring tape only sees what's really part of your body. It's easy to get discouraged when you've worked out for a week and then step on the scale to see you've gained 2 lbs.

    Everything that she said ^^.

I started by just logging everything I ate - whoo, what an eye-opener that was. Started to cut back on things gradually.

Started small on the increased exercise also, park further from the door at work, take the stairs, take a walk.

    You can do this!
