What's the deal with sodium? (and other nutrients)

I've seen a lot of MFPals post saying sodium is not good, stay away from it. I'm wondering why? I don't really know why I need the nutrients I'm tracking.

Most people say they retain more water if they eat too much of it. If you're old like me, it's not good for the heart.
I don't add salt to anything, ever, but it's in everything.
  • Hi there! In and of itself, sodium is not bad and the body needs it, and a lot of other nutrients to function properly. However, sodium is like most everything else, too much of a good thing is not good  Sodium can cause a person to retain fluids and, in excess, can lend to cardiac problems. Do a search on sodium on the Mayo Clinic site for a more in depth explanation. You may also want to do searches to learn about what the various nutrients do or don't do for your nutrition. The more we know, the more we can figure out what our own unique bodies need! Hope this helps!

Heart disease and high blood pressure run in my family so it only makes sense to stay away from things that are bad for the old ticker!

Besides I puff up like a marshmallow when I have too much and my wedding ring barely fits.

Thank you so much! I really should get some books out of the library and do some research. Very helpful :)

I'm trying to keep a close look at the sodium I take in now, I know we need it but not too much of it! I bought a low sodium veg juice the other daya nd compared to another regular veg juice I had and the difference was shocking! 85mg of sodium vs 880mg *EEK*
