Shin Splits

I have Knee problems and have never been a runner, BUT I've been starting to jog to add to my speed walking workout that doesn't bother the knees. As I've been running I keep getting plagued by Shin Splits. I stretch, got new shoes, wear insoles (flat feet), stretch after working out, drink lots of water, take a day off for the muscles to recover... It seems like I do everything. For once in my life I am motivated enough to jog, and feel healthy enough for it, and my darn Shins are the problem, OY! In any event anyone who has experience with this problem I would love to hear your advice.
Thanks
L

Here's a recent thread on the topic.

If you don't find your answer here, use the Search function. This is a pretty common topic and is addressed pretty frequently. :-D
  • I tape mine and it helps. You can google taping shin splints or talk to a doctor - it does help. Strengthen your calves, stretch, proper shoes - all those things you are doing so hopefully taping can help!
  • I have too had this problem in the past... All I can tell you is that my experience has been that they go away after your body gets used to your new activity level. I started off walking at about 1.5 Miles/30 mins everyday and I got them a lot but I didn't stop walking I pushed myself to walk through them since I was only walking for 30 mins and I wouldn't feel them until I was already into my workout. I now walk/jog about 2 Miles/30 mins and 3.5 Miles/1 Hour on the weekends, I've been doing this for a little over a month and I haven't felt them in awhile.

Good luck... If they don't go away after some period of time I would check with your doctor.
