Alli

I've been battling with issues of my weight for a long time, finally started to stop bitching about it and start doing something about it. I've seen really good reviews about Alli weight loss pills, what do you guys think about them? (I already know I need to eat well and exercise obviously)

Taking Alli pills is more likely to make you poop yourself in public than lose weight. There are thousands of stories of the horrors people have been through while taking them.0
-
Haha well that would definitely be embarrassing!!!0

There was a thread recently with lots and lots of Alli horror stories (people losing control of their bowels). Honestly, I'm still scarred by some of the stories in that thread.
Eating at a calorie deficit will result in weight loss. Taking Alli will block the absorption of some of the fat you eat, which is just another way to create or contribute to a deficit. For me, it wouldn't be worth it. But I'm highly dedicated to bowel control and don't feel like eating a low fat diet.0 -
Honestly, I have used Alli and I never got the greasy farts, even when going over fat. So it really depends on your stomach.0

Do you think it's worth giving them a go? Like did they actually help with weight loss? If it gets to the point where I'm nearly *kitten* myself in public then I'll know not to take them anymore haha0 -

Yes... the horror stories. I think I'll just copypasta my experience with it, because mfp'ers don't let mfp'ers take Alli.I've never taken Alli, BUT, I do have a real world story to share.
I used to work at a furniture store... about 3 years ago. We once had a a female customer come into the store. Well, she had to make a break for the bathroom quite suddenly. After some time the salesperson who had been working with her complained (I was in customer service) that the lady never came back and that he'd wasted time with her. A handful of minutes passed and I went to the bathroom. What I saw I can never ever unsee.
Without going into too much gruesome detail, there was orange poo everywhere. The lady's clothes were in the trash, soiled. The lady was in one of the stalls hysterically crying. I left and told the manager about it. She went to help out the lady and basically gave her a sheet from one of the floor model beds to cover herself so she could leave the bathroom. The manager later told us the lady said she was taking Alli and she'd basically exploded everywhere. She apologized over and over. I felt bad for the lady. How embarassing and humiliating for her that must have been. Then the other customer service girl I worked with volunteered to clean the bathroom (we didn't have a cleaning service at the time, it was a brand new store). I didn't envy her position. It was the single most grossest thing I've ever seen (and I have 2 kids...so...).
So yeah... word of caution there....0 -

You can lose weight without them. There's no point in gambling and hoping you are one of few people that don't poop themselves in public.0 -

Enjoy the greasy surprise diarrhea...
Also, you are not going to take this for the rest of your life. Eating less and moving more is all you need.0 -

Yes it does help a little bit because it blocks some of the fat, you'll see orange in your toilet when you go number two. But you do have to reduce calories and take multivitamins when taking Alli. You can't just eat whatever and expect the pill to do the work for you. It is a tool, just like exercise.
I never crapped myself. No grease leakage either, or stomach churning or any other side effects even while eating higher amounts of fat.
I suppose it's worth trying. It says on the bottle to only take it if your BMI is 27 or higher and you're supposed to stop when your bmi is under 27, which is what I did.0 -

People get side effects when they ignore the instructions. That's not Alli's fault, that's the users fault.0 -

Basically, Alli works by making you reduce your calorie consumption by reducing your fat consumption, because if you don't - you crap yourself. You'd lose the same weight just reducing your calorie consumption without it (and reducing your chance of sharting yourself). There are definitely people who have used it and not had those accidents, but they're the ones who have reduced their fat accordingly, which begs the question - if you're going to reduce your calories to avoid pooping yourself while taking expensive pills, why not just reduce your calories for free?0

How much weight do you want to lose?0

Personally, I tried them so I could get a head start, and this was way before MFP and before I knew anything about nutriton. Once I got to a bmi of 27, I stopped as per the instructions. My BMI is 24 something and the rest of my weight loss is up to me.
If I knew then what I did now, I would have never tried it. The pills aren't expensive though, I paid less than thirty bucks for a 3 month supply.0 -
Don't do anything to lose weight that you won't do to maintain your healthier weight. Period.0

Tbh I read reviews of the product online and it was just saying how wonderful they are really but after reading this i don't think I fancy *kitten* myself lol think I'm just gonna stick to eating properly and exercising !!!0 -
You'll have a much greater sense of achievement if you do it without slimming aids. To keep the weight off you'll need to learn to eat without them in the long term.0

Waste of money. Do this the right way and it will be much easier to sustain for the rest of your life.0

Well, it only works if you follow the instructions like anything else. But if I knew then what I know now [aka eating in moderation and exercising] then I wouldn't have bothered. You can't take Alli after a certain point and certainly not for the rest of your life, so I agree with the other posters. If you can't do it for life, it's probably not worth it.0 -

The furniture store story is the one etched in my brain, but here are more: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10290083/alli-xenical-does-it-work-please-only-answer-if-you-have-actually-taken-it/p10 -
OP, in order to lose weight, you will need to eat less calories. All the Alli is really doing is forcing you to eat the right number of calories by punishing you with grossness if you don't. You don't need that. There are tons of people here an MFP who have lost 10 lbs, 50 lbs, 100 lbs without any pills.
Why don't you try just plugging your stats into MFP, getting your calorie goal and start accurately and consistently logging your food and drink. For a fraction of the cost of your first bottle of pills, buy a digital food scale and use it as often as possible. Give yourself 4-6 weeks to get the hang of it and start to learn what foods will keep you full for less calories and which you need to be super careful with or limit to stay on track. You can always try adding this other stuff in later if you want, but why spend the extra money and risk the consequences if you don't have to?
You can do this! you just have to be patient and put in the effort to learn and tweak until it just becomes the way you eat. Read the stickies at the top of each of the forums, they will help a lot too. Good luck!0 -
