New running shoe pain?

So, I just bought a new pair of running shoes today, the same size I always get (7.5) at a specialty running store. I was anxious to try them out, and started out on my run. My run was supposed to be 9 miles today, but I had to cut it short at 6 miles because my feet started hurting and feeling like they would cramp up. Now, I've heard that you shouldn't have to break in running shoes much, that they should feel good from mile one. So, I guess my question is, did I just try to push it too far right away. And if so, should I give it a few more runs to see if they still hurt? Or should I see about returning them (not sure if that is possible or not yet....). Thanks!

No, you don't have to break in running shoes -- they should be good from mile 1.

That said, size varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, so you can't just always get the size you've gotten. (I'm a little bit shocked that a specialty running store would have let you do this.) Plus, the fit of each brand is a little different -- my foot is wider closer to the toes than most peoples, so the brand that works for me doesn't work for my hubby.

The store I get my shoes from will let people exchange after a run if the fit isn't right. Call the store up, explain what's going on, and see what their policy is. (FWIW, the store I go to will also let you do a test run around the block before you buy. It's helped me with a decision more than once.)

Yeah, the store I go to would have let me do a test run, but it was so darn cold outside that I just kind of ran around the store inside. And they know me there, and know that I am always a size 7.5 lol.

It's best to be fitted. Every brand and model is different. The shoe should fit like a glove when you try it on...if it doesn't, it will not "break in" to fit right, eventually. I would take them back and try again. Your feet will thank you! If you continue to wear them, you could wind up with injury (experience speaking). Good luck to you!

Return the shoes. They don't fit you right if you're having pain.

Are they a different model to what you normally get?

Running shoes should feel good from the get go. If they aren't feeling right, they aren't right and will lead you to injury. Take the back and get refitted.
