I have a free trial on Fitbit premium, the trainer section says my activity level is active. I do 12 to 15 thousand steps a day and an hour of Pilates a week (although quite new to mfp this has been the case for a number of months on Fitbit).
Should I have my activity set at active or lightly active on mfp?

Whatever you're more comfortable with. You get more calories to start out with at active, but a higher adjustment at lightly active.

If you pair them together the Fit Bit burn will adjust your burn in MFP.

I take about the same number of steps as you and do 30 minutes of cardio 3-4 days a week and I have mine set to lightly active. I've been losing steadily and as expected.

If you have your fitbit linked up to MFP, then it actually doesn't matter what you set mfp to. The fitbit will adjust your calorie goal to meet what you're actually burning regardless, and in keeping with your deficit of course. I linked mine, realized I'm actually "lightly active" and not "sedentary" so I changed mfp to the former because I'd get to the end of the day and find I had 300 calories to spare I COULD'VE eaten when I needed them earlier. Once I changed my activity level (thus upping my MFP suggested calorie goal) I could REALLY count on the number it gave me and not have to wonder whether I'd get to the end of the day, hungry, having missed out on food I could have had if I wasn't so active in the evening I threw all my numbers off.
