So ive found counting calories quite easy and been really satisfied at the end of each day. But today my little one has whinged constantly all afternoon and its made me turn to food. So ive well and truly gone over my daily calorie allowance and am still eating! How does everyone else handle stress eating and not turning to food when stressed?

I try and find other things to do, or if it's a particularly stressful few days I'll eat to maintenance. Sometimes taking a break is what you need to take care of your mental health, for example last week I had a major deadline that made up a large proportion of my overall degree grade, so I ate to maintenance that week.
If you find other things to do, that keep your hands or mind busy, you'll be less likely to be fixating on food. Another option is to choose low cal high volume snacks like popcorn, that will keep you occupied for a while but wont make too much of a dent in your calories.

One quick fix for me is to slam down 2 or 3 large glasses of water in rappid succession just as FAST as I can--so fast that it makes me feel uncomfortable and even a little nauseous. That will often stop a binge in its tracks just on its own. It make me so uncomfortable that I don't want to eat for a good hour or so--and that time is often what I need to put things into perspective, take a deep breath, look in the mirror and say "food isn't going to solve this; let's make another plan."

This. It's not a race. Eat to maintenance if it's a particularly tough day/week. You'll be okay.

Great Value - Yellow Popping Corn (36g) No oil. 130 calories. More than you could eat.
Made in an air popper or in a brown paper bag (google that). Along with a lot of drinking water.

I stress ate my way back up 40# after getting a new position at work...after a year of this nonsense, I had it in my head that work & the idiots here are NOT going to get the best of me & I'm the one with control. I stop myself & get my head in the game, think about it a minute before I grab at unnecessary foods. Exercise is great as well.

Easier said than done, but willpower & getting p*ssed off helps lol

I think recognising that you only want to eat because you are stressed is the most important step. Have a glass of water and give yourself a few minutes to try and think - am I really hungry? Or is it just stress that's making me want to eat? If you recognise it as stress, try and get busy! Clean the house, do a quick workout, play with the kids. Once a bit of time has passed you'll be okay.

At least, this is what works for me!

Oh, do I ever hear you on the whining kids thing! When I'm having one of those days I make sure to stay out of the kitchen, or better yet, get out of the house entirely. More often than not we all end up in a better mood and I haven't eaten too much chocolate!

If that's not possible I try to log before I mindlessly snack to see how it'll affect my day. More often than not seeing my numbers turn red will get me to make a different choice, commit to more exercise, or skip the snack entirely.

And when a stress binge happens, just log, learn, and move on :)
