    Only you can motivate yourself.

Have you stood in front of the mirror naked lately? That's usually a good kick in the butt.

Take pics and when you become unmotivated just remember why you started. This usually helps me. I have no problem helping motivate, but since I can't be there physically to push you to workout or cook meals the best I can do is offer to be here when you have questions and support along the way. Best of luck to you!

^I really like the message in this thread. We can give you all kinds of quotes and stories, but you're in this for the long haul and you have to find the strength to keep going from within. Every hour of every day.

Diane, Thank you for that link. I loved the message... even though it forces me to take responsibility for my decisions, each and every hour. It is so much easier to blame something outside of us for our lack of action, when in my case, it is something inside of me that doesn't really want to do it. I saw this in the comments section of that link:

"Eating a cake didn't "happen to me" and neither did not getting out of bed. These are decisions. I did that. {She says that} something in me doesn't want to do it - so I don't. My fears and anxieties come from just plain not wanting to do things, not having the discipline to get them done, and letting that doubt make my decision for me."

I'm going to bookmark that link, so the next time I feel like the person who started this thread and want something outside of me to "give me" motivation, hopefully I'll remember that I don't need motivation (external). I need to decide to act (internal). If I'm unwilling to make that decision, maybe I don't really want it and shouldn't be pretending I do.

When was the last time you had to stop and think about your next step when walking?

    Seriously!

You haven't had to, have you?

I'd say unless there is some specific reason that walking is difficult for you (such as in an injury, handicap, etc...), then most, if not all of us don't really give a whole lot of thought to how we'll take our next step, or the one after that one... or the next billion steps for that matter!

    My point is this...

Sometimes being at the beginning of a weight loss journey, (and sometimes even when we're down the road a little ways!), it can seem like we're totally consumed with food...

We wonder how many calories or points this or that has... and what we'll eat for breakfast... for lunch... for supper... not to mention snacks, desserts or drinks!!

We're tracking (right?!), and we're weighing and measuring our food (right?!)... we're reading labels... we're chopping... baking... grilling... dipping and sipping all day long!

And maybe it can seem like it's a bit overwhelming at times... is that how you're feeling by it all? Like maybe if it's going to be so all consuming for the rest of your life... that you're just not up to the challenge?

Okay, then back to my original question and line of thought...

    Walking.

You don't give it that much thought... and yet, have you ever stopped and thought about how a baby is that's learning how to take his first steps?

Well, as a Mother to five- let me tell you in case you haven't thought about this before... babies are all consumed with trying to get those little feet and stout little legs to move in the direction they want them to!

From the time their bright little eyes open in the morning till they droop with weariness at night... they are struggling with the idea of movement... of walking... of going forward!!

    But then what happens?

I mean once they get the whole 'learning how to walk' thing down and they're all over the house and into everything... what happens next?

I'll tell you what... they're RUNNING!!

And you know, it's the same
    with us on this journey.

At first- counting calories (or Weight Watcher points)... weighing and measuring foods... reading labels, etc... etc... seems to take over our whole life, and it can feel like it's all we ever think about!

But eventually- as we get further down our pathways... we learn how to make this a part of our lives without even thinking about it any more.

These things that were once so 'all consuming' in the beginning become as easy as walking... we won't even give it a second thought!

    And then, watch out!!

    Because that's when
    we'll take off running!!

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

Hey girl! I know it can be tough. And what they say about motivation, making decisions, having dedication.. all of that is true.

But it is also important to have some self compassion. Self blame and shame will only hurt you and push you farther down the road of avoidance, punishment, and putting things off.

So instead of getting more and more frustrated at not having that 'spark' or not feeling super determined, how about giving yourself a break? Acknowledging where you are. Acknowledging that maybe you just need to start small. Set a really easy goal. Achieve it, and build from there!
