Exercises at Work?

I work in an office, and I could easily spend two or three hours sitting without realizing it. I was considering getting one of the elliptical trainers under my desk (for example: http://www.amazon.com/Stamina-55-1610-InMotion-Elliptical-Trainer/dp/B000VICRO8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1308253468&sr=8-3). I don't always have time to walk around the block on breaks. Has anyone tried this?

Also, what other "mini" exercises do you do at work when you have the chance? I know it's weird to think about it while at work, but being completely sedentary for eight hours isn't ideal.

Thanks!

I do squats, dips, lunges, pushups against the wall.

When I go to the bathroom ( which is often with the amount of water I drink) I will sneak in two sets of 15 squats, and two sets of 15 leg kick backs........ Takes a few extra minutes, but gets the heart pumping a bit :-)

I also go to the bathroom two floors down from my floor, so get to do a bit of stair work as well....

Every little bit helps when you are sitting at a desk the whole time....

How about getting one of those exercise balls to replace your chair? You'll be using more muscles to sit on it, and IIR it will improve your posture too. (My son's 2nd grade teacher has done this for her class for several years and it seems to work great, even with a bunch of 7-8 year olds)

today I took my lunch on a walk. I had to walk a little slower in order to eat but it was better than sitting and eating.
  • I bought an under the desk bike pedal. Any time I have a spare 10-15 minutes I just sit back and "ride" the bike. I can sit and go through paperwork or just sit back and pedal away. I have even inspired one of the doctors in my office to buy one. It's just one of those little things that I am hoping helps get me to my goal seeing that I am just starting out.

I sit at a desk all day too. I, like some of the others, will do squats, lunges or take a brisk walk around my floor. But the under desk elliptical thingy looks pretty neat. Good luck.

Some places won't allow this due to a potential safety issues....my work won't allow this and they cited safety as the reason.

There are three of us at the office with Reebok Stay Balls (large exercise ball). We use them as chairs and it is great for your core!

  • It's late (past midnight), I need to get up in less than 6 hours so I'm a little "off" right now. But here goes my "loopy" (and plagiarized*) answer:

    jump to conclusions
    fly off the handle
    dodge responsibility
    sidestep problems
    bend the rules
    stretch the truth
    run down the competition
    pass the buck
    stir up trouble
    dig up dirt
    sling mud
    stab people in the back
    throw your weight around
    shoot the bull
    beat around the bush
    beat the system
    push your luck
