Acid reflux?

So I guess this is the best place for this post, since there's not a general "health" board.
Does anyone deal with Acid Reflux or GERD?
I'm 23, not overweight (just trying to get to pre-BC weight for my upcoming wedding), but with a family history of acid reflux. The last month or so, I've noticed crazy weird coughing, phlegm, and weird difficulty breathing. I thought it might be related to the more intense exercise I'm doing. Called my doctor and she ordered an inhaler.
Anyone with experience?

Yup...I had weight related asthma, heart burn, yada yada. The inhaler will do you WONDERS!!! All that you describe sounds like just restricted breathing.0

It could be Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (silent reflux). I realized that my sore throats/coughing went away when I started taking Prilosec. I had no idea they were related. Worth bringing up with your doctor.0

I was diagnosed when I was 22 with a hiatal hernia which causes acid reflux. I feel like your doctor might be misdiagnosing and you could bring that up to them. I was eventually referred to a stomach specialist to have an endo scope done. I have to take medicine daily but other than that I don't really have any further complications. There has been a lot of talk with my doctor regarding long term use of the medications but unfortunately there are not a lot of other options. The surgery that is out there isn't really a proven fix and they have found after 10 years or so you may require to have the surgery again. For now I am sticking with maintaining my weight and taking medicine.0

^^This.^^
Unfortunately, silent reflux can be more difficult to treat than GERD with more typical symptoms. My GI says the theory is that most people who have silent reflux are over-responding to normal amounts of acid. It took me two year on a super high dosage of Protonix to feel better and figure out my triggers. But now I've been off of meds for several years. I'm sorry you're dealing with it, because I know how truly horrible it can make you feel. Good luck!0 -
Me and GERD have been friends(totally one sided) since I was 19. I'm 34 now. Any exercise increases my bout with the bile that presents itself. I have been through all the proton pump inhibitors and right now am using Prilosec. It works well when I remember to take me. I know if I lose a good 20 -30 pounds I won't need the meds but getting there has been the challenge. Good luck! Hope you find what works for you!0

i did the prevacid and that stopped working and then i did the prilosec and that stopped working and now i'm on zantac (all prescription strength, not otc)
i've had ulcers and gerd.
exercise has helped, diet too when things aren't good. at the same time, you will take my coffee from my cold dead hands0 -
I have a history of acid reflux, but only when I lie down to sleep, typically if my bed time is close on the heels of eating. I've discovered that propping my head and upper body up at a slight angle with extra pillows, rather than lying flat, not only has greatly reduced the number of incidents (one in the last month, vs before 2-3 per week) as well as reduced (but not eliminated) my snoring.0

My GERD pretty much subsided when I quit my old job. Unfortunately, that's rarely a practical solution.0

I was on omeprazole (sp) basically Prilosec for 12 years, it was at first amazing. I could eat just about anything I want. Anyone who has ever had that "jolt out of bed in the middle of the night fire in the throat" can attest to the pain of acid reflux. Here lies the problem, this type of acid control reduces acid to about 10% for 24 hours, takes a couple days to get rolling. Miss a day and life gets ugly real quick. Feels like a heart attack. That's why I suggest Zantac, it reduces to 50% for a shorter duration. Anyway I decided enough was enough and quit it cold turkey, brutal brutal process. Took over 2 months to get back to normal. After dropping 30 pounds I rarely have a flair up. For me its a little like the rules for the movie gremlins 1. No eating within 4 hours of bedtime, 2. Tomato based items WILL destroy me (chili, pasta) so for lunch they are ok, dinner is bad. Alcohol will exacerbate the problem. Good luck!0
