TRX/Suspension Trainers- Your thoughts?

Hello everyone!

I was looking for ideas on rebooting my routine since I'm bored with my BodyBar. I saw that there are suspension training systems (like TRX) on sale on Amazon and I was wondering how the MFP community likes these workouts. I like that I can attach one to my bathroom door and go to town.

Any feedback/tips/helpful hints? Let me know :)

If I didn't even lift, I would probably go this route. Great workout. I am too lazy for that though.

You can get a great workout from them if I couldn't hit a gym its what I would do..

It's a good supplement to freeweights, but by themselves they're limited. For example you can't really use them for basics like weighted squats, lunges and deadlifts. Also it can be hard to measure the difficulty level of exercises (there are no "pounds" to track). If i worked out at home with minimal equipment, i'd get a heavy pair of adjustable dumbbells, and a door-mounted resistance band kit. :+1:

TRX strength routine are one of my favourite types of exercise. But, you need to know what you are doing (wrong form will mean getting little results, as body position is what defines the difficulty). Also the quality of the suspension system matters. I have used the original TRX and a several other brands, and some of the cheaper ones, they really are useless. So, do your research before buying.

I've been using a suspension trainer for a few years. Once you understand how changing the leverage effects the load you have room for progressions.

Robert dos Remedios - Coach Dos - is big on using the trx mixed in with bodyweight exercises (and kettlebell stuff and sandbags) for metabolic conditioning/circuit work. Might be worth googling some of his stuff...

TRX is great - I use it with my trainer. Get the original though. Not exactly something you want to fail while using it.

Bumping my own thread- I picked up the WOSS version and I'm loving it. Now the only question I have is- how to track the workout? I searched the exercise database under both TRX and suspension trainer and came up empty. Should I log them as bodyweight exercises?

When I used mine, I would wear a heart rate monitor. Check out BodyFit By Amy on YouTube, she has some good trx workouts.

Suspension trainers are the most cost effective piece of equipment due to portability, area of use and amount of exercises one can perform with it. You don't need to spend a lot either. Knock offs basically are just as good as TRX.

Regarding logging, it depends on how you're using your suspension trainer. They can be used for HIIT or resistance training.

When I log something like that, it depends on effort. If it was a light effort, I use calisthenics - light effort. If it was a tough effort, I use circuit training. Neither are terribly accurate, and especially on the circuit training I reduce the MFP calorie burn.

That's good to know. Knock offs always make me hesitant.

The WOSS version is really good; nice and sturdy.
  • I love mine! Especially on days when you're too busy to get in a longer workout, 30 mins on a TRX will kick your butt. A good investment IMO

I decided to go with a Jungle Gym XT rather than the TRX. Personally I think it is better.
