Are detoxes safe/healthy? I'm just curious because I would like to kick start my weight loss, but I'm not sure about it. Thanks!

Some of the are harmful and some aren't. None of them remove toxins from your body, though.

They range from ineffective at best to dangerous at worst.

Save your money and drink water...and pee a lot. That is how your body does detox. The kidneys and liver will filter out the bad stuff and drinking plenty of water will give them what they need to detox your body.

As a report on NPR said, detoxes should be called "Celebrity Fad Rip Offs." Weight loss comes from diet and exercise, not cleaning out your colon.

I liked doing the Dr Oz 3 day smoothie 'detox'. I found that it gave me a kick start and got my taste buds and body back to craving real whole foods instead of garbage. But that was just my experience with it.

Human bodies are not antique dirt bikes and therefore do not require a kick start. They also do not require reboots like a computer.

    They really don't kickstart anything.

Your best bet is to save your money and skip the detoxes and cleanses.

^^ Haha I like that. Water really is amazing.

"Detox" is such a loaded term, I think that's why the responses are so varied. I've seen some detox plans that are nothing but vegetable juice for days -- that can't be good for you! Plus you'll be starving your body, so you'll probably just gain it all back and be tempted to binge eat when you're finished.

True weight loss is a lifestyle change, not a crash diet. Just get started exercising and dieting! I know it's hard to get started, but take things one day at a time. Add exercise and cut back on calories gradually if you're struggling to get started.

Best of luck with your weight loss journey!
