Tips for low-Sodium when eating out at restaurants

Plenty of discussion of low-sodium and eating out, but not together! Most restaurants are good at low-fat and gluten-free or "light", but I don't think I've ever seen low sodium listed. Tomorrow is my first restaurant outing since my Low Sodium requirement. It is a seafood place which will have generally healthy items, but I know sodium lurks in seafood a lot.

Any quick ideas on what looks safe? I've only been logging for a week, so I'm not super familiar with the ins and outs of low-sodium except that it lurks in surprising places.

I think your best bet is to go through the menu ahead of time and look at the nutrition breakdown. You'll see the sodium level of each item and it can help you to make an informed decision. I would also try to build your other meals for the day around this outing so you can keep your sodium low for the rest of the day.

I just tell them low or no salt when ordering, they usually have no problem accomodating.

I didn't see any nutrition info on the menu. Is it true that scallops are a better choice than shrimp? I think I read that somewhere.

Stuff like salad dressing is tricky, they can't reduce salt there. Do I just have to avoid sauces, condiments compeltely?

olive oil and vinegar for salad dressing. can't answer about fish question as i don't eat it. sauces you would be best to avoid them but condiments like mustard very low sodium. i would let your server know your low sodium requirement and see if something can be done to accomodate. worst case keep your intake low during the day and drink water with your meal at the restaurant.

Good luck with your outing tomorrow! It is hard finding things to eat when on a low-sodium restriction. Would definitely drink water with the meal, and continue to hydrate afterwards to flush the system.
