How much do you gain on your period?

Recently I haven't been able to weigh myself due to my scales breaking but now I have bought new ones I'm around six or so pounds heavier than the last time I weighed myself. There are many reasons as to why I'm heavy, I've figured out that after I've eaten I'm always 2lbs heavier than I am in the morning on an empty stomach, I also went drinking last night. I know I get heavy when I'm on my period but I've forgotten by how much because I've missed mine for the last three months, or they've been so irregular they're extremely light so it doesn't really affect my weight.

I'm curious on how much you girls gain when you're on your period, if you actually get heavier or lighter when on?

(Sorry it's rambly! I was taken aback when seeing the weight on the scales so I'm trying to figure out why I'm so heavy!)

Approximately 2 days before I start, I weigh ~5 lbs heavier, but it goes back to normal as soon as I start.

I don't normally gain, but I don't lose anything for the week leading up to my period. Then the second day after it starts, I drop.

But, I know that a lot of women can gain 5-7lbs leading up to their period.

Day before can be up to 5 pounds and tapers down until done! Never weigh yourself after a meal. If you can weight first thing in a.m. (after the bathroom if possible).

And drinking all those carbs last night... Def may have some water retention going on... You are dehydrated... you need to hydrate... LOL

A couple days before I start, I typically put on 2 or 3 pounds. They all come back off a couple days after it's done. Also, water retention can be a factor. I weigh myself first thing in the mornings before jumping in the shower.

I always gain at least 5 lbs, but I always think I have some extreme weight gain/bloating than compared to most women with mine. It is nice to know that others have to go through going up and down so much too!

I actually am close to my lowest weight when my period starts; it's ovulation that makes me hold the most water. I can see an increase of up to three pounds during that time.

For me, give or take 5 lbs during that time and ovulation. I only weigh myself once a month because of all the fluctuations.

New scales will probably weigh differently to your old ones. Check them by putting something on them you know the exact weight of

You shouldn't weigh more than once a day, everybody puts on weight over the day ..also the food you eat has weight

I also went drinking last night.

I go up 2-3lbs around ovulation and period

You need to understand water fluctuations because you're bothered about something natural that happens to everyone and that's not sensible

I've started using trendweight (based on recommendations here) in the hopes of not letting myself panic too much during ups and downs. I read the book it was based on (The Hacker's Diet) and these charts were an eye-opener:

My group uses a scale that gives us weight, body fat, bone and water %. It is so useful. Last week my weight was up 0.5 but so was water % but fat % was down reflecting my hard work outs. I don't know how accurate it is but we are looking at trends over a long period of time.

3 pounds, every month, the day before my period. On Day 2 I will be back to normal, or pretty close.

I'm on birth control so I don't ovulate but I always gain 3-5lbs during my period. I've actually been running two packs back to back with permission to skip every other period.

At least 5 pounds, but I have massive water retention because I get so hungry before my period that I probably eat 6000 calories over maintenance that week... then I (usually) lose them before I ovulate again.

Of course I haven't really lost any weight in months because of that.

Only about 1lb....ovulation is worse for me. I gain about 2 to 3 lbs about 5 days before and lose it 2 or 3 days after. So for at least a week I see no progress in weight loss...then have a whoosh of a 3 to 4 lb loss a couple days after ovulation.

I might get a whoosh toward the end of my period too...but it's smaller...like 2lbs.

Usually about 0.5 kg (approx. 1 lb).

Sometimes none at all ... I rarely feel extra hungry before my periods now that I've lost weight. When I get down under about 140 lbs, my premenstrual systems are greatly reduced to the point that periods kind of sneak up on me.

I haven't noticed any particular changes around ovulation, but I might try to track it and see.

I died at "teeth of terror"

OP, as others have stated, it's normal to fluctuations. You're going to see more not sticking to a set time to weigh yourself though, although I'm guessing you were just trying out the new scale.

Try a trend graph instead from someplace like Trendweight.com, it helps put fluctuations into perspective.

My period started today. Normally I gain about three pounds, which all comes off plus a little more exactly a week after my period begins. This month, however, I only gained a pound. I have been drinking more water recently.

Also, normally my appetite spikes up for a few days before my period starts, and I eat at maintenance for a few days. This month, however, that didn't happen. I've been eating a lot more fiber the past five weeks.
