Low carb diet for insulin resistant results

So I went to the doctors and had blood work done and all that fun stuff, and they came back and told me that I am insulin resistant. So now that I have been put on a low carb diet, and take stupid pills, I was wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and what if they have had any results with a low carb diet? Of course I am not happy that I have let myself gain weight to get to this point, but I am hoping to nip it in the butt before it becomes a more serious problem and turns into diabetes.

Often see PCOS or IR people reporting success with low carb

I am a type 2 diabetic. I control my blood glucose with a very low carb diet (monitored by my doctor). It works very well for maintaining my blood glucose levels without medication and, as you can see, I have lost 55 pounds in the last 5 1/2 months. I have more energy and feel great. Eat low carb as your physician has prescribed, lose weight and you will probably soon be off of the medication.

I'm fairly new with low carbing. But when I stay on it and do good i loose weight. I try for under 70 carbs per day. Somedays I hit over but like anything sometimes life gets in the way.

Low carb/keto has been recommended for lots of medical issues...it can even treat uncontrolled epilepsy. It can be a challenge to resist temptation, but you can also switch the types of temptations that you allow yourself...buffalo wings, lots of cheese and nuts, and for dessert, try whipping heavy cream with a little sprinkle of instant sugar-free jello. It comes out like really fluffy pudding and is delicious.

Laura that is awesome! Congratulations on your weight loss and being able to control your blood glucose with medications. You are an inspiration.

I do moderate carb but with the majority of them low glycemic index foods (that don't spike my blood sugar; I use my meter a lot!). I do still have a small treat every day, before my walking (lowers my BG). Exercise can really help, so try to take some walks, do a little dancing, etc, or even more :)

I'm still on the medication, but my overall levels have stopped going higher each doctor visit. I have a bad time with the overnight levels (dawn phenomenon) compared to throughout the day, which looks good when I eat right. When I eat poorly my levels do show it, though! I'm sure I'd be in an awful place had I not changed some things!

Yes, a strict low carb diet with carbs below 100 grams per day is what you need to do.

I followed Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book, which is a LCHF diet. If I follow it my blood glucose is normal. LCHF diet can work very well for IR, plus I lost 40 lbs in just over 4 months - eating less seemed easy without my old cravings.

One option is also looking into a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. You can even mix & match and turn a vegetarian diet into low carb. It's easy and there's many benefits!

However it is irrelevant to the point of this thread don't you think?

Great idea! Imagine how much easier it will be to restrict carbs when you don't eat any meat.

    Wait, wut?

OP going lower carb, generally presumed to be under 150g but there is some discussion over it being more relevant in terms of the amount of carbs per meal can be effective and is certainly worth attempting

Losing weight and including some vigorous exercise are your key stepping points to addressing this issue

Not necessarily! I hope OP finds some insulin resistant-friendly solution.

keto + vegetarian would be doable, but hard. keto + Vegan makes my head hurt :noway:

LOL about the vegan one. I couldn't imagine! Cheese or milk help so much for me where I would've had a carb snack.

Vegetarian could work for 'lower carb', but you'd have to be like me and look to the low GI/GL carbs. There are a ton of them in a vegetarian diet, so you really might end up having your levels go well on veggies. I eat a lot of beans and quinoa, etc, myself. But I also really enjoy meat ;)

Yeah...that doesn't make sense at all!

I eat a moderate carb diet and exercise a lot. My A1C has been at 5.0 for several years.

Diet and exercise can make a huge difference.
